Injured hiker airlifted by Coast Guard

Updated 6:41 p.m.

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK — The US Coast Guard sent a helicopter to rescue an injured hiker from Champlain Mountain Saturday afternoon. Officials received a 911 report around noon that Xavier Moran, 29, of Canada was on the mountain, not on a trail, with a broken leg.

A search involving several agencies located Moran somewhere near the Orange and Black trail on the face of Champlain, an Acadia spokesman said. Because of the steepness of the terrain, he said, the injured hiker was hoisted by a Coast Guard helicopter to an ambulance at the Bar Harbor athletic fields.

The Precipice trail and Schooner Head Overlook were closed for part of the day to facilitate the rescue.
