Boating course

ELLSWORTH — The United States Power Squadrons’s “America’s Boating Course” is being presented at Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, 20 Forest Ave., by the Penobscot Bay Sail and Power Squadron.

Classes begin on Thursday, Sept. 22, and continue seven weeks on Thursdays. Class times are 6-8 p.m.

Anyone interested in learning to skipper a boat safely and confidently is encouraged to attend the public course.

Subject matter includes types of boats and their uses, boating laws, safety equipment (both required and recommended), finding your way and adverse conditions, communications, trailering, knots and lines water sports topics, and introduction to electronic navigation using paper charts and chart plotters.

Successful completion of the course and an examination will provide students with a boat operator’s certificate (required for recreational power boaters in many states and for some young boaters in Maine).

The course fee is $34 per person including course guide/workbook or $44 total for two persons sharing materials. To register, contact Scott Miller at 374-2003 or [email protected].
