BAR HARBOR – The Mount Desert Island High School girls’ and boys’ track and field teams both captured first place of five teams in the meet they hosted Saturday. The girls won with 125 points, ahead of Hermon with 104 and George Stevens Academy with 89. The MDI boys were far in front with 192 points to GSA’s 121 and Foxcroft’s 118. The athletes seem to be on a roll, coach Brad Witham said, racking up personal records (PRs) left and right. He’s especially proud of the supportive culture the group has built. “I’ll hear them tell each other not just, ‘Hey, good job,’ but also, ‘It was awesome to watch you do that!'”
Ashley Anderson, Sydney Wright, Waylon Henggeler and Caroline Driscoll won the 4×800-meter relay with their time of 10:56.01. Catherine Ding was first in the 100-meter hurdles with 19.83 seconds. Paige Mason and Adriana Novella led the 100-meter dash, with 13.52 and 13.53 seconds respectively. Wright, Xingyao Chen and Ava Drennan finished fourth, fifth and sixth in the 1600-meter run.
Anderson, Addie Beal, Novella and Mason won the 4×100-meter relay with 53.81 seconds. Anderson won the 200-meter dash with 27.44 seconds, pulling well ahead of the runner up in the home stretch. Driscoll and Henggeler worked together in the 3200-meter run, finishing first and second with 12:24.04 and 12:28.72.
Erin White was runner up in the high jump with 4 feet, 8 inches. Camilla Thomassen-Tai and Abby Bridgers were fourth and fifth, respectively. Jennifer Clemens was first in triple jump with 30 feet, 7 inches. Geni Gobel was second and Delia Hallett was fourth in javelin. Sara Norberg took first in discus, with 86 feet even, and shot put with 33 feet, 6.5 inches.
On the boys side, Matthew Hanna was runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles with his time of 18.08 seconds. Brandon Murphy won the 100-meter dash with 11.82 seconds. Aidan Robichaud-Ward won the 1600-meter run with 4:53.44.
MDI fielded three teams in the 4×100-meter relay and ‘A’ team Hanna, Griffin Maristany, Ralph Magnani and Ryan Bender won the event with 46.17 seconds. Magnani won the 400-meter dash with 50.77 seconds. Ethan Craigo was third in the 800-meter run with 2:17.97. Bender won a tight race in the 200-meter dash, finishing with 23.89 seconds. Murphy was runner-up with 24.11. Robichaud-Ward was second in the 3200-meter run with 11:06.98. Hanna, Josh Bloom, Bender and Magnani won the 4×400-meter relay with 3:40.40.
Aaron Miller, Jake Boumil and Jordan Harris swept the first three places in high jump, led by Miller with 5 feet, 10 inches. Bender won the long jump with 19 feet, 11.75 inches. Croix Albee finished second in javelin with 142 feet, 9 inches, fourth in discus with 100 feet, 7 inches, and second in shot put with 40 feet, 9 inches. Harris won the pole vault with 12 feet even.
