Trojans vanquish Caribou Vikings

CARIBOU — The Trojan varsity softball team notched its first victory of the season when it swept the Caribou Vikings in a doubleheader on the road on Saturday, May 21.

“We knew going in that we had a chance to beat them. I basically just told the team, ‘this is our time, this is what we need,’ ” said head Coach Jamey Lewis. “I’m really proud of the girls. They stepped up and got us a couple of wins, and that’s a big deal.”

The MDI squad won with a convincing score of 13-3 in the first game, racking up eight hits.

Senior Cassidy Parady led the Lady Trojans in offense with three hits, two doubles and five RBIs.

Ally Bender, Maddie Thornton, Avalon Kerley, Aubrie Boyce and Lindsey McEachern each had a single. Brittney Corson added a double.

McEachern took the pitcher’s mound for a complete game effort, giving up only four hits and striking out 11.

“We needed to score runs and pitch well and not make errors in the field. For the most part, we did a pretty good job of that,” said Lewis. “If we did make an error in the field, we usually got off the field without them scoring. That was a big plus; we didn’t let it snowball into more.”

MDI 5 – Caribou 2

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Trojan squad vanquished the Vikings 5-2.

Thornton and Parady each had two doubles in the game. Bender added two singles for MDI, while Alaina Duley and Corson each had a single.

McEachern was on the mound for four innings, while Thornton pitched three, each collecting four strikeouts in the winning game.

“They played really well, our pitchers were on fire. It’s the best I’ve seen Maddie [Thornton] pitch all year. I was really impressed with her coming in and stopping them. She just came in, and that was the end of it,” said Lewis.

For the Caribou Vikings, Rachel Soucy pitched both complete games and Hope Shea and Soucy each had a double.

Bucksport 10 – MDI 3

The numbers on the scoreboard after the MDI varsity softball game against the Golden Bucks were not representative of the hard battle that the Trojan girls fought, according to head Coach Jamey Lewis.

MDI took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning when they added two runs, but that lead was snatched away quickly in the next inning by Bucksport, who then led 3-2.

A game-tying hit by the Lady Trojans in the bottom of the seventh took the game into an extra inning.

MDI committed three errors in that extra inning, and Bucksport scored seven runs.

“We went eight innings with them, and we should have had them in seven,” said Lewis. “We should have taken them, but in the eighth inning, we just fell apart.”

McEachern pitched a complete game to Kerley, gathering eight strikeouts while giving up seven hits.

Thornton led the Trojan offense with two doubles, while Parady, Duley and McEachern each had a single.

“They played such a good game, the girls did so well. That score definitely didn’t represent the game,” said Lewis. “I’m really proud of the girls, they played awesome ball.”

Old Town 10 – MDI 0

The Trojan softball team fell 10-0 to Old Town on the road on Thursday, May 19.

Mikayla Richards recorded a double and two singles for the Coyotes, and Nat St. Louis, Olivia Albert, Kayla Hayward, Olivia King and Olivia Westura each chipped in with two hits.

Olivia Albert of Old Town allowed three hits and struck out six Trojan players.

For MDI, Kerley had two singles, and Duley had one.
