Trojans split double-header

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team split a double-header with Presque Isle at home on Saturday and are 3-3 for the season.

The Trojans lost the first game 4-3. The Wildcats led 1-0 at the top of the fourth inning and added three more in the top of fifth to take a 4-0 lead.

MDI cut that lead by scoring their first run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Even though the Trojans fought back, adding two more in the bottom of the seventh, they weren’t able to get ahead.

“We had one bad inning. We made some mistakes defensively, and they took advantage of it,” MDI head Coach Mike Swanson said. “We hit the ball well in the first game, but didn’t have things going for us until the last inning.”

MDI senior Seth Young pitched five innings for the Trojans, and senior Geoffrey Hanscom pitched the final two.

Stanley Grierson notched a single and a double, along with two RBIs.

Nick Stanley, Alden Fournier, Seth Young and Jacob Mitchell each added a single for MDI.

In the next game, junior Seth Clark paced the Trojans on the mound with a complete-game effort, allowing only four hits and striking out six. MDI won 3-2.

Trojan junior Ezra Johnson notched two singles and a double, and Mitchell had a double as well.

Fournier and Stanley had two singles, and Matt Lambert added a single.

In the second game, we were hitting the ball well. We hit the ball hard and right at them. We were out deep and made some nice catches,” Swanson added.

Hermon 9 – MDI 5

The MDI boys fell 9-5 to the Hermon Hawks on the road on Thursday, April 28. The Trojans led 5-1 until the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Hawks swept in eight runs to win the game.

For MDI, sophomore Matt Perconti pitched five innings, allowing one run. Junior Riley Swanson pitched the final. The Trojans were led by Young with a double and one single while Fournier singled twice.

“For almost six innings, we played flawlessly,” Swanson said. “We’re getting timely hits, and we bunted guys over and got them into scoring positions.”

MDI 11 – John Bapst 1

At Bar Harbor, Grierson drove in three runs with a single as well as a double to lead the MDI team 11-1 past the John Bapst Crusaders.

Senior captain Dylan Collins pitched five innings for MDI, allowing two hits and striking out eight.

The Trojans added four runs in the third inning and three more in the next.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Mac Shea drove in a run for the Trojans and Hanscom’s single drove in the next two runs.

“We just have to keep hitting better and executing,” Swanson said. “We’re doing a lot of good things, and we’ll get better and better.”

The Trojans are set to play Ellsworth High School on Thursday, May 5, and Foxcroft Academy on Saturday, May 7, and host Old Town High School on Tuesday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m.

Correction: A previous version of this article misstated that Seth Clark pitched five innings in the first game of a double-header against Presque Isle. Clark pitched the complete second game and Seth Young pitched five innings in the first.
