Trojans nudged from playoffs

WATERVILLE — The Mount Desert Island High School Trojans baseball team were edged out of the playoffs in a 2-1 loss to Waterville Panthers Wednesday.

“We played really well. It was our sixth one run game we’ve lost,” coach Mike Swanson said. “We had no errors again… in an hour and fifteen minute game, that’s the way baseball goes.”

On Wednesday, Ezra Johnson scored the Trojans’ only run in the first inning, after an RBI from Riley Swanson sent him home. Johnson hit a double in that inning, and Swanson hit a single.

Waterville scored their first run in the bottom of the first, after a Panther got to third base on a missed catch by Johnson at center field. That runner scored after the next at bat.

In the second, MDI’s Seth Young notched a hit but was caught out. Drew Shea walked, and Kyle Lamson attempted a bunt that ended up in a double play that sent him and Shea back to the dugout.

First baseman Mac Shea hit a single in the third but ended up stranded by three consecutive outs by pinch hitter Nick Soper, Johnson, and Nick Stanley.

Seth Young hit a single in the fifth inning. However, he was called out rushing home plate after Lamson hit a single.

Mac Shea hit a single in the sixth.

In the bottom of the sixth, Waterville scored their second run, after one of the Panthers hit a single, stole second, and was sent home by a hit straight down the middle.

In the top of the seventh, Swanson hit a double, and got to third after a hit by Alden Fournier.

After two outs, Swanson was still on third. Young was at bat. It was a full count, all on the line for the Trojans, and Young swung, connected, but got out running to first.

The game and the season ended in the top of the seventh with Waterville up 2-1.

Dylan Collins pitched a full game for the Trojans, getting two strikeouts, walking two of the panthers, and allowing five hits.

“It’s been a fun season. We’re young, and I’m looking forward to next year,” he added.

Members of the 2016 Trojans varsity baseball team include: Dylan Collins, Geoffrey Hanscom, Matt Lambert, Kyle Lamson, Nick Soper, Seth Young, Seth Clark, Ezra Johnson, Mac Shea, Riley Swanson, Alden Fournier, Stanley Grierson, Matt Perconti, Jacob Mitchell, Nick Stanley, Drew Shea
