Trojans ground Eagles



BAR HARBOR — After weeks of postponed matches due to weather, the Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis teams had their work cut out for them with several matches set over the course of a week.

But that didn’t stop the Trojans from dominating on the court, with the girls winning their past three matches and the boys winning two out of three.

Both of the MDI boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis teams beat Ellsworth for the second time this season at home on Monday.

The boys won 3-2, while the girls won 4-1. The teams previously had defeated the Eagles in Ellsworth.

The MDI boys owned the court in boys’ singles, with first, second and third singles players defeating Ellsworth handily.

Drake Janes beat Arthur Jodrey 8-5; Jimmy Carroll beat Norman Jodrey 8-6; while Gabe Michael won out against Andrew McCullough 8-2.

Ellsworth defeated MDI in first and second doubles.

Peyton Cole and Trent Goodman of Ellsworth beat September Murray and Ryan Kelly 8-1, while Cody Grover and Colby Clark defeated Nolan Murphy and Lanvin Estacio 8-5.

A doubles exhibition set finished in a draw, with MDI’s Max Craigo and Jasper McLaughlin tying Lucas Wheeler and Peyton Cole of Ellsworth 5-5.

In girls’ first singles, Ellie Bridgers defeated Alexa Grant 8-4, while Delaney Smith beat out Ellsworth’s Mirriam Nelson 8-6.

The Eagles’ Olivia Robidoux won over Maggie Collins 8-4.

Both doubles teams from MDI defeated Ellsworth.

Rachel Jacobs and Emily Banks came out with an 8-2 win over Brianna Abbott and Carli Bryant, while Rachelle Swanson and Baylee Cust defeated Faith Braley and Sophia Petros 8-6.

MDI vs. John Bapst

The John Bapst Memorial High School boys’ and girls’ varsity tennis teams defeated MDI High School last Saturday in Bangor.

The John Bapst boys defeated the Trojans 5-0, while the girls beat out MDI 3-2.

The Crusaders’ Paul Branch defeated Janes in boys’ first singles 8-0, while Darren Hanscom beat Carroll 8-0 in second singles.

In third singles, Fabian Erbach of John Bapst topped Michael 8-2.

Tien Duong and Tom Carmack defeated MDI’s Murray and Kelly 8-2 in first doubles, while Owen Lynch and Tanner Ackley beat out McLaughlin and Nick Hardig 8-0.

In girls’ first singles, Crystal Bell of John Bapst beat Bridgers 8-3, and Florentina Keil of John Bapst defeated MDI’s Smith 8-4 in second singles.

India Janes of MDI earned an 8-6 win over Sharon Huang in third singles.

The teams split the doubles sets.

Becca Johnson and Haley Grover of John Bapst won over Jacobs and Banks 8-3, while MDI’s Collins and Cust defeated Lanie Reid and Grace Phillipon 8-5.

MDI at GSA

MDI High School and George Stevens Academy split in girls’ and boys’ varsity tennis matches last Friday at the Ellsworth Tennis Center, where GSA hosted.

The GSA boys won over the Trojans 3-2, while the MDI girls defeated GSA 3-2.

The MDI boys’ first singles player Drake Janes and GSA’s Ben Politte went to two sets after their first set ended 9-8 in favor of Janes. He defeated Politte again in the second set 7-4.

Boris Chen of GSA defeated Carroll 8-4, while MDI’s Michael fell to Bryant Hsieung 8-2.

In boys’ first doubles, Murray and Kelly narrowly defeated Arlo Stabler and Kent Fang 8-6. The Eagles’ second doubles team of Christian Jones and Rhett Cheng beat out Murphy and Estacio of MDI 8-0 to give GSA the win.

In girls’ first singles, Lindsay Nevin of GSA defeated MDI’s Bridgers 2-8.

MDI won out in second and third doubles, with Smith beating Julianna Allen 8-4, and India Janes winning after two sets, 9-8 and 8-6.

MDI’s first doubles team of Jacobs and Banks won over GSA’s Tatianna Heggestad and Vivian Cheng in two sets, 9-8 and 9-7.

Yvonne Rogers and Chloe Politte of GSA defeated Swanson and Collins 8-2, while Heggestad and Politte won over Swanson and Cust 8-1.

MDI was set to face Hermon High School in Hermon on Tuesday and will next host Presque Isle High School on Tuesday, May 16, at 3:30 p.m. The teams will head to Washington Academy on Wednesday, May 17, for a 4 p.m. match. A match at Old Town High School is set for noon on Thursday, May 18.
