MDI baseball team falls to Coyotes

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team remained scoreless against Old Town at home on Tuesday, May 10, and with a 10-0 loss, the Trojans dropped to 3-6 on the season.

“We’ve been playing well, losing games by a run, but today against a top team, we made mistakes,” MDI head Coach Mike Swanson said. “We made some costly errors, and they took advantage of that.”

The Coyotes notched 16 hits in the seven-inning game, and MDI had four. Trojan junior Riley Swanson contributed two hits, and Alden Fournier and Jacob Mitchell each had one.

“We didn’t hit the ball well. Early on, we had chances to score a couple runs, and we didn’t execute a bunt and didn’t get a big hit. We’re leaving a lot of guys on base,” said Swanson.

The MDI varsity team was behind 0-2 until the top of the fifth inning when the Coyotes capitalized on an error and added five more runs to widen their lead.

“I give them [Old Town] a lot of credit, they’re a good team. They hit the ball and take advantage of these mistakes,” Swanson said.

Seth Young pitched five innings for the Trojans while Matt Perconti took the mound for the remaining two.

“We’re pitching pretty decent, playing good defense and making about one error a game,” Swanson said. “We just have to keep battling.”

At Dover-Foxcroft, the Trojan varsity baseball team fell 3-2 to the Foxcroft Academy Ponies on Saturday, May 7. Senior Dylan Collins was on the mound for MDI and struck out four players and allowed no walks in a six-inning effort.

MDI took the lead and were up 2-0 until the fourth inning when the Ponies tied the score and added another run in the sixth to put away the game.

The Trojan offense was paced by Nick Stanley, Alden Fournier and Riley Swanson, who all chipped in singles.

On the road on Friday, May 6, the Trojan team fought hard, but fell 5-4 to the Ellsworth Eagles.

MDI took a 1-0 lead over the Eagles in the top of the second inning when Fournier had a single and Swanson contributed a double. The Trojans relinquished their lead in the bottom of the third inning when Austin Baron of Ellsworth began the inning with a walk and Jack Lee added a single for the Eagles.

The Trojan boys tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning as Seth Young and Collins each added a single.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, with two players struck out, the Eagles notched two doubles taking a 5-2 lead.

MDI replied with two additional runs in the top of the next inning to narrow the lead, but were unable to tie the score and fell 5-4.

Matt Perconti pitched four innings for MDI, allowing six hits and striking out five players. Geoffrey Hanscom pitched the final two innings for the Trojans, holding the Eagles hitless, walking one player and striking out one.

MDI is set to host Hermon High School on Thursday, May 12, at 4:30 p.m.
