Trojans crush Golden Bucks



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity baseball team defeated the Bucksport Golden Bucks 3-0 at home on Tuesday, May 24, and improved to 6-8 on the season.

Matt Perconti pitched six innings, scattered seven hits and walked four players for the shutout.

Riley Swanson pitched the final inning, striking out one player.

“We played really well today,” MDI head Coach Mike Swanson said. “Matt [Perconti] pitched well, we made some big plays and only made one error.”

Seth Young notched two RBIs in the fourth inning and added a double and a single.

Ezra Johnson and Swanson each had a hit for MDI, Alden Fournier scored two runs, and Jacob Mitchell added one to seal the victory.

Bucksport was led by Tanner Stegner and Noah Lenor with two hits apiece.

“We played well defensively, we had an error in the end, but that was it, and I’m pleased with that,” said Swanson.

MDI 8 – Caribou 1

The Trojans split a doubleheader with the Caribou Vikings on the road in Aroostook County on Saturday, May 21.

Seth Clark of MDI scattered four hits and nine strikeouts to record a complete second game 8-1 victory for the Trojans.

MDI had 12 hits in the second game. Jacob Mitchell led with three hits and notched three RBIs. Alden Fournier drove in three runs and had two hits. Senior Kyle Lamson notched two singles and three RBIs.

Ezra Johnson added two hits for the Trojans, and Matt Perconti, Seth Young and Matt Lambert each had a single.

Caribou 3 – MDI 2

In the Trojan’s 3-2 loss to the Vikings in the first game of the doubleheader, Young pitched the complete six innings and struck out seven players.

Riley Swanson singled twice to spark MDI. Mitchell had a triple.

Johnson, Drew Shea and Stanley Grierson each notched a single.

“MDI had three runners on bases in the second inning, but never scored,” Swanson said. “So early on we should have had three or four runs. We kept the pressure on. But we couldn’t get a big hit.”

Old Town 3 – MDI 1

The Trojan’s varsity baseball team fell 3-1 to the Old Town Coyotes on the road on Thursday, May 19.

MDI sophomore Perconti scattered six hits, struck out two players and walked two in a complete game effort.

Fournier notched a double to drive in the lone run for the MDI boys.

Ethan Stoddard and Jake Ketch of Old Town recorded singles in the sixth inning, and Austin Sheehan drilled a double to the fence to drive them in for the Coyotes’ lead.

The Trojans are set to go against John Bapst on the road on Saturday, May 28, at 1 p.m. and host Ellsworth High School on Tuesday, May 31, at 4:30 p.m.
