Trojans claw hard against OT Coyotes

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity girls’ softball team fought tooth and nail to fend off the Old Town High School Coyotes Tuesday night at home. But an eighth inning homerun by the visitors led to an 11-8 loss for the Trojans.

The 2-4 Trojans held their own against the No. 1 seed and the defending 2016 Class B state champs in an exciting neck-and-neck game.

After an early lead by the Coyotes, the Trojans tied up the score 4-4 by the bottom of the fourth inning.

MDI then took the lead after a single by Ruby Brown led to three runs off of Old Town errors. The girls continued to run up the score after Lindsey McEachern ran it home after a double by Hannah Chamberlain for a score of 4-8.

At the top of the fifth, the Coyotes knocked in two runs for a score of 6-8 until the top of the seventh inning when the visitors tied the score 8-8. Old Town allowed no hits from the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh so the game went into an eighth inning.

With two runners at first and third, Olivia Albert’s hit sailed over the wall for a homerun and a total of three runs to take the 11-8 lead.

Old Town’s McKenna Smith allowed no hits in the bottom of the eighth, and the Coyotes went away with the win.

“I am really impressed with them tonight,” said MDI Head Coach Jamey Lewis. “It is such a tough loss when you work that hard and get that close.”

After two losses last week, Lewis said the team stepped up to the plate against Old Town.

“We worked on some things after the Foxcroft game [last Friday], and I think that came through tonight,” she said. “[Old Town Head Coach Jenn Plourde] doesn’t lose many games, and I am really proud of the girls.”

She led Foxcroft with two doubles and a triple, followed by Kilee Hutchinson with three singles, and Grace Bickford had two doubles. Kylie Dow had two hits, while Kiara Prescott had a single and double.
