Trojan rackets fall to Eagles

ELLWORTH — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis teams fell to Ellsworth Tuesday, a 2-1 loss for the girls’ team and 3-2 for the boys.

Regitze Jacobsen gave the MDI girls their only match win, of 8-1 over Miriam Nelson in first singles. In second singles, Katherine Hoff fell to Ellsworth’s Brianna Abbott 8-2. Austria Morehouse lost her third singles match 8-3 against Bailey Clarke.

MDI girls doubles fell in close matches. Olivia Chandler and Claire Shaw battled to a 9-7 loss, and Addy Smith and Lelia Weir fell 8-5.

On the boys’ side, Reider Watson, scored a 9-8 (7-4) win over Ben Osterlin of Ellsworth at second singles. Nicholas Harding fell to Ellsworth’s Norman Jodrey 8-3 at first singles. At third singles, Luiz Estacio fell to Keegan Grey 8-1.

In first doubles, Trevor Morrison and Fernando Avalos lost to Ellsworth’s Ryan White and Lucas Wheeler 8-4. Second doubles was dominated by Ashton Lozano and Marshall Reiff of MDI, who won 8-6 over Liam Stephenson and Darren Easler of Ellsworth.

“I’ve seen a ton of improvement over the first few weeks of the season,” Head Coach Tyler Hunt said. “A lot of these kids came into the season without even holding a racquet before. We’ve got nothing but up from here.”

In practice, Hunt said, he wants to focus on improving consistency with positioning and ball placement.

“But that will come with time,” he said. “We’ll get better and better with it.”


Last Thursday, April 25, the teams played their first away matches of the season in Hermon. The girls’ defeated Hermon 3-2 and the boys fell 4-1.

In MDI first singles, Jacobsen swept Hermon’s Jillian Taylor with an 8-0 win. Hoff and Morehouse both fell 8-4 in second and third singles, respectively.

Girls’ doubles brought the heat, with Chandler and Shaw overtaking Emily Willey and Jillian Shorey of Hermon to win 8-5. Smith and Weir won second doubles against Mia Buzzeo and Allison Treat 8-5.

In boys’ first singles, Harding defeated Nate Fettig 8-5. At second singles, Watson fell to Wyatt Butler 8-6. Finn Seyffer played third singles for MDI, falling to Isaac Parent 8-5.

Morrison and Estacio teamed up for first doubles and lost their match 8-2. At second doubles, Avalos and Reiff battled to an 8-6 loss.

Both teams were scheduled to host Foxcroft Academy Wednesday.
