Trojan baseball defeats GSA on weather rule

BAR HARBOR – It was a dark and stormy afternoon, and the Mount Desert Island High School/George Stevens Academy baseball game was called off for thunder and lightning with the game tied 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh and a runner on second with two outs.

Officials called a half-hour delay to wait out the lightning and then called the game, making the score at the end of the last complete inning the final score. MDI led 9-8 at the end of the sixth inning, so the win went to them and they improved to 6-9 on the season.

Thomas Paola, Seth Young and Matt Perconti shared pitching duties for MDI. Outfielders Jack Sasner, Sandy Henggeler and Ezra Johnston got a workout with lots of flyballs. Cordell Soper had a two-RBI single in the fourth to give MDI a 6-5 lead. Riley Swanson, Dylan Collin and Johnston also knocked in runs.

The Trojans are set to host ninth-seed Ellsworth Tuesday at 4 p.m. for their final regular season game.
