BAR HARBOR — The annual Josh Sprague Memorial Basketball Tournament is set for March 27-28 at the Mount Desert Island YMCA. The adult tournament is set for Wednesday, March 27 beginning at 6:30 p.m. The students will play Thursday, March 28 beginning at 4 p.m.
Registration for students is $15 and $20 for adults. Games are played in a 3-on-3 format and players may register with or without a team.
The event honors the late Josh Sprague of Bar Harbor by playing the game he loved in a place he loved. Now in its 20th year, the tournament is a fundraiser for the Josh Sprague Memorial Fund at the YMCA, which supports youth sports on the island. It provides scholarships for young athletes to go to sports camps and helps pay for fees related to high school and club sports. It also supports the YMCA by providing funds for equipment and programming.
The first 100 participants receive a tournament T-shirt with Josh Sprague’s retired jersey number. According to Josh’s dad Steven Sprague, Josh was No. 22 on the basketball court at MDI, but No. 5 on the baseball field, a number he shared with his favorite pro player, Nomar Garciaparra. His baseball number was retired by the school when he passed away.
