BAR HARBOR — The annual Josh Sprague Memorial Basketball Tournament is one of many events this winter to have to keep a flexible schedule due to weather. The adult competition was held last Thursday, March 15, and the kids’ tournament is planned for today, March 22, at the Mount Desert Island YMCA.
The event honors the late Josh Sprague of Bar Harbor by playing the game he loved in a place he loved.
Now in its 18th year, the tournament is sponsored by The First.
Last year’s event raised a total of $1,587 for the Josh Sprague Memorial Fund at the MDI YMCA. The fund supports youth sports on the island. It provides scholarships for young athletes to go to sports camps and helps pay for fees related to high school and club sports. It also supports the YMCA by providing funds for equipment and programming.
“The goal is to be financially solvent and grow resources to expand services and opportunities the YMCA deems worthy,” said Josh’s dad, Stephen Sprague.
The first 100 participants receive a tournament T-shirt with Josh Sprague’s retired jersey number. Josh was No. 22 on the basketball court at MDI, but No. 5 on the baseball field, Sprague said, and his baseball number was the one the school retired when he passed away. Josh loved that he shared the jersey number with his favorite pro player, Nomar Garciaparra.
