Tennis teams sweep Coyotes

BAR HARBOR – The Mount Desert Island High School tennis teams swept their Old Town counterparts in a home match Thursday, 5-0 for both girls’ and boys’ teams.

The Trojan boys improve to 2-2 on the season. In singles, Luke Horton defeated Nikko Knapp handily 8-1. Kaleb Payson won his match 8-4 and Teddy Geary 8-5. Hamish Stevenson and Hunter Strauch successfully defended an early lead in extra games to win first doubles 9-7. At second doubles, Drake Janes and Jimmy Carroll won 8-6. “The guys work really hard in practice,” coach Ben Rowell said, “and it’s been a great group. There’s only good things ahead, I’m sure.”

The MDI girls, 3-1 on the season, only gave up one game in all their matches combined. Sarah Phelps and Maeve Geary at first and third singles logged perfect 8-0 matches and Ivy Wallace defeated Rheylan Burke 8-1 at second singles. Trojan doubles teams Ellie Bridgers and India Janes, and Ashley McEachern and Molly Corson had 8-0 victories. Rowell is still experimenting with the lineup on the girls team, he said. “Everybody gets a chance to play, and that makes us a good, deep team. Hopefully we’ll figure out the best combinations by the end of the season, and go from there.”

MDI is set to host Hermon Friday at 2:30 p.m.
