BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis teams, both boys and girls, lost to the John Bapst Crusaders 3-2 on Tuesday. Both boys’ first and second singles were decided in a tie-breaker.
Kaleb Payson was defeated by the Crusaders’ Paul Branch 10-8 in a tie-breaker, and Teddy Geary was defeated by Darren Hanscom 7-3.
MDI’s Drake Janes beat Max Ouyeng 8-4 in third singles.
“Kaleb’s [Payson] head is held high,” head Coach Ben Rowell said. “He played well on the court. He didn’t lose it, it was taken. He was beat. You’ve got to feel good about that.”
In first doubles, Jimmy Carroll and September Murray beat John Bapst’s Tien Duong and Minh Le 8-2, while Gabe Michael and Derek Collin were defeated by the Crusaders’ Tommy Carmach and Noah McCarthy 8-3 in the second.
“We had chances,” Rowell said. “You can’t ask for more than that, and they just beat us. They played just as well as we did, and just a couple of points decide the match.”
On the girls’ team, all of the singles players lost to John Bapst.
India Janes lost to the Crusaders’ Crystal Bell 8-4 at first singles, Molly Corson to Alice Podolsky 8-4 at second, and Ellie Bridgers to Miranda Coleman 9-7 at third.
The doubles teams both won their matches, with Emily McCarthy and Olivia McCarthy crushing Makenzie Baber and Robyn Henry 8-1 in the first doubles matchup and the team of Delaney Smith and Eliza Schleif beating Grace Harmon and Spirit Huang 8-3 at second.
“It just wasn’t our day in singles,” Rowell said. “We played great in doubles, and it just wasn’t our day in singles.”
Three of the Trojan’s singles players – India Janes, Drake Janes and Payson – will be competing in the state championships on Friday, May 27, at Lewiston High School at 8:30 p.m.
MDI – WA
Both the boys’ and girls’ tennis teams defeated the Washington Academy Raiders 5-0 on the road on Wednesday, May 18.
“It was a good result from both the teams. They played pretty well,” Rowell said.
In girls’ first singles, India Janes won 5-0 over Cameryn Farnsworth, who retired due to an injury. At second singles, Molly Corson defeated Libby Kalloch 8-1, and Ellie Bridgers won 8-0 against Sara Johnson of the Raiders at third.
Delaney Smith and Eliza Schleif defeated Kate Walls and Kaylee Pettegrow 8-6 in the first doubles matchup.
Gabby Link and Izzy Wellman-Webster of MDI beat Victoria Samuels and Maggie Hood 8-4 in the second.
In boys’ first singles, Kaleb Payson won 9-8 against Only Wei of Washington Academy.
“Kaleb [Payson] managed to squeak out a victory, which is good for him personally. We had already won the match, but he played a tight match against a really solid opponent,” said Rowell.
MDI junior Teddy Geary defeated Adrian Wagmann 8-3 at second, and Drake Janes won the third singles 8-6 against Manuel Sanchez.
In first doubles, the duo of Jimmy Carroll and September Murray beat Eric Smith and Joey Moore 8-3.
Trojan freshmen Rocco DenDanto and Derek Collin beat Finn Sunde and Ian Squire 9-8 in the second.
“I wanted to give a couple kids a chance. We moved up Derek from the junior varsity team to help us out a little bit. I just like his energy and enthusiasm on the court,” said Rowell. “It was back and forth for a little bit, and then they were able to win a tie-breaker victory, which was good.”
The Trojans are set compete in the PVC doubles tournament on Saturday, May 28, at Caribou at 11 a.m.
