BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis team is prepped and ready for its first match of the season on Monday when it will host John Bapst Memorial High School at 4 p.m.
The boys’ team is stacked with six upperclassmen who last year made it to the semifinal round of the Class B North playoffs against John Bapst.
“Each match, we got better and better, and we gave the top team in Class B a run for their money,” said Head Coach Ben Rowell.
Of last year’s team, just two players graduated, and the remaining players are experienced to handle a postseason.
“We only lost two last year, so we are trying to figure out our No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and that’s between senior Teddy Geary and junior Drake Janes,” Rowell said.
Gabe Michael, Jimmy Carroll and September Murray will vie for the third singles spot.
Rowell said that all 11 boys are prepared to play. “I think [the boys’] strength is that they’ve built a really good team atmosphere,” Rowell said of the boys. “They have fun with each other.”
“Players one through 11 are all solid, good tennis players, and that is going to make us better by the end of the year.”
The girls’ team is younger with some new team members.
“We have a couple of new girls this year and some solid returning players,” Rowell said of the girls’ roster. Senior Delaney Smith and juniors India Janes will be the No. 1 and No. 2 singles players, followed by junior Ellie Bridgers.
“They’ve got a lot of experience, and they are looking to pick up some new kids. The pressure will be on them, but they can handle it.”
Max Craigo, Lanvin Estacio, Ryan Kelly, Jasper Berzinis-McLaughlin, Nick Harding and Nolan Murphy round out the boys’ roster, while Rachel Jacobs, Sammy Jacobs, Emily Banks, Izzy Wellman-Webster, Maggie Collins and Rachelle Swanson complete the girls’ lineup.
Next up for MDI is a matchup at Ellsworth High School on Wednesday, April 26, at 4 p.m.
