Swimmers take their mark

OLD TOWN — The Mount Desert Island High School swim team competed against Old Town High School here last Saturday at the first swim meet of the season.

The Trojan girls outscored Old Town 87-82, and the MDI boys fell to the Coyotes 66-104.

Head Coach Tony DeMuro is confident in this year’s team.

“We have a good mix of returning swimmers and some new people this year, which is always good,” said DeMuro. “We have a lot of kids who have a lot of talent.”

Last season, the MDI boys came in third place, and the girls came in fourth place, in the Penobscot Valley Conference championship.

While the team meets almost weekly for competitions, the real goal is to win the Penobscot Valley Conference and qualify for the Class B state championship.

“Our focus will be on improving and working extremely hard over the next nine months,” he said.

While there are multiple individual and team events that MDI participates in, DeMuro coaches his team to do well in all of them instead of standing out in just one.

“We always have to be well-rounded to be a good team,” he said.

In the Old Town meet, the MDI girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team, consisting of Eliza Schleif, Rachel Jacobs, Lydia DaCorte and Maddie Woodworth, came in first place with a time of 1:52.84.

The girls’ 400-yard freestyle relay team (Ruby Brown, Bailey Cust, Anne Naggert and Ceileigh Weaver) took a first-place finish in 4:23.18.

The boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay team, made up of Jacob Mitchell, Amos Price, Hutchin Gerrish and Liam Sullivan, finished first in 3:36.98.

In the girls’ 200-yard medley relay, the team of Woodworth, Weaver, Schleif and Cust came in second with a time of 2:07.16, just behind the winning Old Town team in 2:04.46.

This year’s girls’ team is made up of 21 girls, including Ruby Brown, Elise Craighead, Yarrow Fabian, Gabbie James, Hannah Viechnicki, Mei Mei White, Katie-Rose Knoblock, Anna Naggert, Rylee Robertson, Cassia Barnes, Bailey Cust, Sammy Jacobs, Raisha Lipski, Eliza Schleif, Sara St. Clair, Brihana Watson, Maddie Woodworth, Lydia DaCorte, Rachel Jacobs, Chelsea Schroeder and Ceileigh Weaver.

There are 16 boys on the team, including Luiz Estacio, Amos Price, Yuri Gabetta, Liam Sullivan, Zeke Valleau, Isaac Weaver, Lanvin Estacio, Duncan Hetzer, Emerson Jeffery, Jacob Mitchell, Timo Neuhof, Herbie Shaw, Adam Bygdeson, Joe Grubb, Sam Tehennepe and Hutchin Gerrish.

The team’s next matchup will be a home meet against Brewer High School at the Mount Desert Island YMCA on Thursday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m.
