Swim teams swamp Raiders



BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School swim teams defeated the visiting Washington Academy Raiders at the final home meet of the season Friday. It was also Senior Night and swimmers Liam Sullivan, Isaac Weaver, Loren Genrich, Anna Naggert and Yuri Gabetta were honored (Zeke Valleau was not present).

The Trojan girls won the meet with a team score of 114-7. The boys’ team score was MDI 110 – WA 40.

Washington Academy has a small team, so many of the events at this meet featured Trojan vs. Trojan competition.

In the 200-yard medley relay, A team Paul Briggs, Isaac Weaver, Sullivan and Gabetta came in first with their time of 1 minute, 55.7 seconds.

Luiz Estacio won the 200-yard freestyle with his time of 2:15.50. Tyler Willis finished second in the 200-yard IM with 2:17.89.

Ponce Saltysiak was first in the 50-yard freestyle with his time of 24.58 seconds. Sam Schleif and Paul Briggs were in a close race for second place, finishing with 26.44 and 26.59, respectively.

Jonathan Genrish came in first in the 100-yard freestyle with his time of 57.76. Sullivan won the 100-yard backstroke with 55.93 and Tyler Woodworth was first in the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:11.69.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, C team Matthew Wheeler, Woodworth, Estacio and Cody Olson finished first with their time of 1:56.73.

Two divers competed for the MDI boys team. Woodworth earned 122.95 points and Joris Korstanje had 70.15 points.

On the girls’ side, Adria Horton, Addy Smith, Mei Mei White and Olivia Underwood won the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 2 minutes, 8.38 seconds, pulling ahead of teammates Maria Saltysiak, Sage Dentremont, Zoe Eason and Naggert, who finished in 2:13.11.

Sadie Sullivan finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 2:26.38.

In the 200-yard IM, Ruby Brown edged Adria Horton to win the very close race, 2:27.31 to 2:27.68. The 100-yard freestyle was also close; Dentremont finished with a time of 1:15.54, just ahead of Elise Craighead’s 1:15.67.

Naggert was first in the 50-yard freestyle, followed by Loren Genrich and Dentremont. Smith won the 100-yard backstroke with her time of 1:10.78 and Brown was the winner of the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:21.16.

Naomi Welch, White, Dentremont and Brown won the 200-yard freestyle relay with their time of 1:58.63. In the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the winning team was Genrich, Naggert, Underwood and Brown.

The boys head to the University of Maine at Orono Friday at 6 p.m. for the PVC championship meet, in which they’ll see swimmers from rival Bangor again after last week’s close contest. The girls’ PVC meet is set for Saturday at 1 p.m., also at Orono.
