Christopher Heel led a pack of more 300 runners and walkers at the third edition of the Sea of Blue Autism Awareness Walk and 5K on Saturday in Northeast Harbor.

Megan Haney, 38, of Mount Desert was the first female finisher in 22 minutes, 38 seconds.

The annual event began when Christopher Heel, as part of a Senior Exhibition project at Mount Desert Island High School, decided to organize an autism awareness walk, which drew more than 150 people. Heel, who has autism, and his parents, Susan and Matt, sought to spread awareness about autism in his hometown.

“It was a beautiful day, and we had great community support,” race director Susan Heel said.

The event raised more than $6,000 this year to help fund the Autism Society of Maine’s programs that support Maine families.
