Young tops at wrestling meet

DEXTER — Mount Desert Island High School senior Wilder Young was the champion in the 152 weight class in a tournament-style wrestling meet Saturday at Dexter High School. Tournament style means that wrestlers were put into weight-class brackets regardless of which school they came from.

“That may be the most competitive weight class, too,” MDI Coach Chip Dugans said. “He wrestled two good kids.”

Freshman Abrahm Malloy continued to wrestle up a weight class since the 113 class is so small. “They were tough matches. He’s been wrestling really well,” Dugans said. He came in second in the class.

The team’s two new wrestlers, Kristian Wehrfritz and Taner Bickford had mixed results. “They’re still making mistakes that cost them wins, but they’re working really hard.”

Assistant Coach John Lane works with the team every morning on conditioning. “He makes us work very hard,” Dugans said. “We won two matches this week where conditioning played a huge part. The kids know they need to really work over Christmas break” to stay in shape.

The team is looking forward to a large Holiday Classic tournament at Penobscot Valley High School Saturday. Fourteen schools plan to participate, making it a good preview of the PVC meet in January.
