BAR HARBOR — Mount Desert Island’s wrestling schedule is out, but the dates are tentative right now following the late resignation of the Trojans’ head coach.

MDI made its return to wrestling after a one-year pandemic hiatus official last week as the school unveiled its 2021-22 schedule. On Monday, though, the school announced that head coach Anthony Dalisio would be stepping down from the position.

Dalisio, whom Athletic Director Bunky Dow said resigned because of “personal reasons,” had led MDI’s program since the school brought back wrestling starting with the 2018-19 season. The school went three years without wrestling after the program was abandoned following the 2014-15 season.

Wrestling practices are currently scheduled to begin Monday, Nov. 22, the first day of the 2021-22 winter season. Yet with no head coach currently in place, plans to start on that date are far from set in stone.

“I hope to have Tony’s replacement in place by the start of the season Monday, Nov. 22,” Dow said. “If no replacement is found by [Monday], we will delay the beginning of the season.”

Should potential delays not affect the start of the regular season, MDI will participate in a preseason match at 10 a.m. Dec. 4 at Bucksport High School. The Trojans would then open the regular season with a home meet against Caribou, Dexter, Piscataquis and Washington Academy at noon Dec. 11.

MDI will then compete in meets at Bucksport High School at 5 p.m. Dec. 14 and 9:30 a.m. Dec. 18. The Trojans will host a home meet at 5 p.m. Dec. 22 against Ellsworth, Bucksport and Mattanawcook Academy before closing out the calendar year at 11:30 a.m. Dec. 19 at Caribou High School.

MDI will open the new year with a meet at Washington Academy at 5 p.m. Jan. 5 before competing at Ellsworth High School at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 8 and 5 p.m. Jan. 11. The Trojans will then compete at Piscataquis High School in Milo at 5 p.m. Jan. 21. The team’s Jan. 15 and Jan. 28 meets have yet to be finalized.

Qualifying MDI wrestlers will compete in the Penobscot Valley Conference championships Feb. 5 at Foxcroft Academy, regionals Feb. 12 at Belfast Area High School and states Feb. 19 at Morse High School in Bath. PVCs are scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m., while times for the regional and state meets have yet to be set.
