BAR HARBOR — With a 12-2 record on the season, the Mount Desert Island High School junior varsity volleyball team had a lot to smile about this year.
“Our two losses came early in the season to Scarborough and Ellsworth, when we were still trying to put it all together and learn the game,” Coach Whitney Walls said.
Walls enjoyed her first season with the team, she said. “It was a huge learning experience for me. I had a great group of welcoming and excited girls that helped me along the way with that. Their growth and improvement was amazing to watch.”
Several team members began the season never having touched a volleyball, Walls said, but “by the end of the season they had gained fundamentals and seemed comfortable on the court. Their confidence in their skills towards the end of the season was great to watch. It’s great to see their confidence grow and watch them grow as players and as teammates.”
The team’s second match against Ellsworth was a highlight of the season. Having lost one match to the Eagles, Walls said, “It was all about execution and guts. We went in knowing what we had to do to win. It was a very close match start to finish, and I think it came down to who wanted it more.
“My girls proved to me that day that they weren’t going to back down. That was a big moment for us!”
The varsity team loses several seniors this year. The skills and experience of this JV team will help keep the program strong for future seasons.
Team members included Lindsey Wilson, Katelyn Mitchell, Marley Chamberlain, Emma Andros, Maddy Shields, Valerie Del Cid, Sammy Sander, Ashely Anderson, Emma Watras, Ellie McGee, Megan Moore, Delia Hallet, Sara Todd, and for part of the season, Jessica Dominy.
