GORHAM — Caroline Driscoll took third place in the girls one-mile, and the boys 4×400-meter relay team were runners up Saturday for the Mount Desert Island High School indoor track team at the University of Southern Maine relay New Year’s Relay meet.

Making the trek to these early-season Southern Maine meets, coach Brad Witham said, “gives the team exposure. By the time they get back to states, they’re not wondering who these people are. That’s invaluable. I’m really happy with their performance against the great athletes from some of these huge Class A schools.”

Driscoll’s mile time of 5:29.25 was a large improvement from last week’s meet and a personal record. Ashley Anderson was 21st in the 55-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 8.14 seconds. Anderson, Catherine Ding, Mackenzie Hanna and Driscoll were tenth in the 4×200-meter relay with a time of 2:05.79.

In shot put, Delia Hallett placed 22nd with a throw of 24 feet, 11.5 inches. Riley Mooers was 33rd with 23 feet, 1 inch.

“It was nice to see the throwers start to work on our season’s progression,” Witham said.

On the boys’ side, Ryan Bender was tenth in the 55-meter dash preliminaries with a time of 6.99 seconds, two places away from qualifying for the final. Brandon Murphy was 13th with 7.06 seconds. Aidan Robichaud-Ward ran a 5:04.45 mile, earning 20th place in the boys one mile. Stanley Grierson was 34th with 5:44.93. Matt Hanna finished sixth in the 55-meter hurdles final round with a time of 8.92 seconds.

Jordan Harris, Bender, Matt Hanna and Ralph Magnani came in fourth in the 4×200-meter relay with 1:39.36. Murphy, Harris, Bender and Magnani finished second in the 4×400 with 3:38.59. In the 4×800-meter relay, Murphy, Noah Clark-Sigmon, Grierson and Robichaud-Ward were eighth with 10:09.20. Jose Chumbe, Clark-Sigmon, Giovanni Mackenzie and Josh Bloom were 15th in the 1600 sprint medley with 4:42.76.

Jumpers Mackenzie and Chumbe were 24th and 25th in the long jump with 16 feet, 5.75 inches and 16 feet, 4 inches respectively.

Micah Hallett led the boys’ shot putters, 37th with 29 feet, 4 inches. Nate Messmore was 41st with 27 feet, 7 inches. Luke Mitchell was 42nd with 27 feet, 3 inches.
