ORONO – The Mount Desert Island High School track team broke or tied six school records Saturday in their league meet at the University of Maine field house. Ralph Magnani broke the school indoor 800-meter record and the high school record for the field house with his time of 2:00.88. The 4×200-meter relay team of Magnani, Brandon Murphy, Matt Hanna and Ryan Bender broke both the school and the high school facility record with their time of 1:34.88.

Bender also broke the junior long jump record with his jump of 20 feet 2.5 inches. Ashley Anderson broke two freshman records with her time of 1:02.74 in the 400-meter dash and 27.58 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Jose Chumbe tied the freshman record in the 400-meter dash with 58.23 seconds.

“This is the best MDI boys’ team we’ve had in a long time,” Coach Brad Witham said. “The 4×200 relay team has been steadily shaving off time, and now we’re in sight of the Eastern Maine Indoor Track League record. Our next two big goals are a PVC championship and state championship. We’ve never won a PVC championship, and now I think we have the depth to do it.”

The meet was shortened to avoid a snowstorm, with each athlete competing in two events instead of the usual three and the 4×800-meter relay omitted.

The MDI girls placed third overall in team scores with 53 points, behind Bangor and Hampden.

Catherine Ding was fifth in 55-meter hurdles with a time of 10.78 seconds. Caroline Driscoll won the one-mile run with 5:34.85 and finished second in the 800-meter run with 2:33.09. Ava Drennan was ninth with 7:30.32. Anderson was fourth in the 400-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash. Ding was seventh in the 200 with 29.72 seconds.

Riley Mooers was first in girls’ shot put with 29 feet 8.5 inches. Mackenzie Hanna was sixth with 26 feet 2 inches. Jennifer Clemens won the triple jump with 30 feet 10.5 inches and was seventh in high jump with 4 feet even.

The Trojan boys placed second of seven in team scores, earning 87 points to Bangor’s 100.

Matt Hanna was third in 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.02 seconds. Murphy won the 55-meter dash with 6.87 seconds. Josh Bloom won the 400-meter dash with 56.19 seconds, and Chumbe was sixth to tie the freshman record.

Aidian Robichaud-Ward was fourth in the two-mile run with 11:08.56.

Croix Albee was fourth in shot put with 37 feet 11.25 inches, and Evan Jeannotte was fifth with 36 feet 10 inches.

Bender won the long jump with his school class record jump and Chumbe was fifth with 17 feet 4 inches. Giovanni Mackenzie was fourth in triple jump with 35 feet 7.75 inches, and Aaron Miller was fifth with 35 feet 5.5 inches. Miller won the high jump with 5 feet 10 inches. Jordan Harris was fifth in pole vault with 11 feet even.

One more league meet is set for Saturday, Jan. 31, before the PVC Championships on Feb. 7 at 3 p.m.
