MDI Trojans win county championships

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Trojan boys and girls claimed the 2013 Hancock County championships in outdoor track and field competition here Thursday.

With speedy sophomore Brandon Murphy winning three events, the Trojan boys finished well ahead of the runner-up Ellsworth Eagles with 169 points.

Ellsworth had 95.5, followed by the Sumner Tigers and Bucksport Golden Bucks with 39 each and the George Stevens Academy Eagles with 33.5.

Murphy took top honors in the 100-meter dash in 11.55 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 23.57 seconds and the 400-meter dash in 53.21 seconds.

Double winners for the MDI boys were Matt Hanna with times of 19.07 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 46.5 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles; and Chris Clemens with distances of 19 feet, 6.5 inches in the long jump and 41 feet, 2.5 inches in the triple jump.

Also posting wins for the MDI boys were Jordan Harris with a time of 10:54.68 in the 3,200-meter run; Aaron Miller with a high jump of 5 feet, 10 inches; Chapin McFarland with a throw of 44 fee5t, 1 inch in the shot put; and the foursome of Murphy, Hanna, Ryan Bender and Clemens with a time of 46.70 seconds in the four-by-100-meter relay.

Individual winners for Ellsworth were Cooper Holmes with a time of 2:10.78 in the 800-meter run; Dan Curts with a time of 4:23.29 in the 1,600-meter run; Nate Dorr with a height of 9 feet in the pole vault; and Dan Cox with a throw of 144 feet, 8 inches in the discus.

The Ellsworth foursome of Curts, Cooper Holmes, Maks Grover and Jeff Weeks won the four-by-400-meter relay in 3:46.48.

The Eagle foursome of Weeks, Kody Holmes, Cooper Holmes and Robert Looker won the four-by-800-meter relay in 8:52.83.

For Bucksport, Paul Fitzgerald won the javelin with a throw of 128 feet, 1 inch.

For GSA, Ethan Lowe won the 1,600-meter racewalk in 11:04.43.
