HAMPDEN — Members of the Mount Desert Island track team competed in the first meet of championship season Saturday with the Penobscot Valley Conference Large-School meet at Hampden Academy.
MDI enjoyed a strong afternoon in both the boys’ and girls’ team competitions. The girls’ team racked up 88 points to finish behind first-place Bangor (195 1/3 points) and runner-up Brewer (90 points), and the boys’ team (123 points) took second as it finished just one point behind the champion Rams.
Grace Munger won the 800-meter run for the MDI girls in 2 minutes, 28.15 seconds, and Bella Brown set a school record in the discus throw for the Trojans with a winning throw of 108 feet, 6 inches. The team of Munger, Azaria Long, Olivia Johnson and Callan Eason won the 4-by-400 relay for MDI with a time of 4:21.91.
The MDI girls got second-place finishes from Eason in the 100-meter (27.56 seconds) and 200-meter (1:01.16) dashes and another from Olivia Joyce in the javelin throw (92-3). The Trojans’ 4-by-800 team Munger, Eason, Johnson and AyliGrace Munro placed second in the 4-by-800 with a time of 10:08.13.
Miles Burr (100-meter dash, 11.52 seconds; 200-meter dash, 23.26) and Archer Hill (shot put, 46-10 3/4; discus, 138-9) claimed two wins each for the MDI boys, who also got a win from Walker St. Germain (51.02 seconds) in the 400-meter dash. The Trojans’ 4-by-100 team (Burr, Henry Lester, Baylor Landsman, Ieuan Howell) posted a winning time of 45.21 seconds.
Landsman (300-meter hurdles, 40.87), Lester (long jump, 20-10 3/4) and Jackson Laws (javelin, 144-9) placed second for the MDI boys. The Trojans also took second in the 4-by-400 (Landsman, St. Germain, Jon Genrich, Ponce Saltysiak; 3:32.40) and 4-by-800 (Genrich, Saltysiak, Cody Parker, Sam York; 8:37.16) relays.
Qualified MDI athletes will close out the season with the Class B championships at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Morse High School in Bath.
