MDI boys, girls 2nd at track meet



ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ and girls’ track teams were runners-up in the season’s third league meet at the University of Maine Field House on Saturday, Jan. 9.

The Trojan boys finished with 69 points, while the girls scored a total of 58.

Brewer High School won the boys’ meet with 156.50 points, followed by MDI with 69, Hermon with 27.50, Central with 13 and Ellsworth High School.

Brewer topped the girls’ meet as well with 137 points. They were followed by MDI with 58, Hermon with 46, Central with 19 and Ellsworth with 12.

MDI Senior Ryan Bender set a new personal as well as a high school facility record in the 200-meter dash with a first place time of 23.44 seconds.

Bender also was on top in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.76 seconds. Sophomore Jose Chumbe was fifth with 7.28.

In the 55-meter hurdles event, Josh Bloom of MDI was fourth with a time of 10.82 seconds.

Bender was second in the 400-meter dash in 52.92 seconds.

In the 4×200-meter relay meet, the Trojan squad of Conner Malbon, Giovanni McKenzie, Chance Closson and Bloom took third with the time of 1:46.09.

Bloom was on top in the 800-meter run with 2:11.73, and Chumbe was third with 2:14.79.

Freshman Thorin Smith took third in the 2-mile run with a time of 12:56.69

Croix Albee was second in the shot put with a toss of 47 feet, 8.75 inches. Evan Jeanotte was fifth with 40 feet, 2 inches, and Micah Hallett was sixth with 38 feet, 7.50 inches.

Chumbe was second in the long jump with 18 feet, 3 inches, and freshman Deandre Reid was eighth with 15 feet, 2.50 inches.

McKenzie won the triple jump with 36 feet, 1/4 inches.

Closson and Reid tied for fourth place in the high jump with 4 feet, 10 inches.

On the girls’ side, the Trojan team of Lily Turner, Sydney Kachmar, Adriana Novella and Ashley Anderson won the 4×200-meter relay meet with a time of 1:54.19.

Anderson won the 400-meter dash event with a time of 1:04.03.

Novella was on top in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.86 seconds. Turner finished second with a time of 8.06.

Anderson also took first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.27 seconds. Turner was second with 28.95, and sophomore Cassia Barnes was 10th with a time of 32.35.

Kachmar was sixth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:58.10.

In the shot put, Mackenzie Hanna was second with a toss of 29 feet, 10.50 inches. Also in the top 10 were Dorothy LeMoine, third, with 28 feet, 11.50 inches; Riley Mooers, fourth, with 28 feet, 10.50 inches; Delia Hallett, fifth, with 28 feet, 3.25 inches; Brigette Olearcek, sixth, with 27 feet, 7.25 inches; and Natasha Olearcek, ninth, with 26 feet, 2 inches.

Junior Allyson Bender took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10.50 inches. Shelby Young was sixth in the triple jump with 22 feet, 3.25 inches.

The Trojan teams will travel to Orono once again for an indoor track meet at the University of Maine on Saturday, Jan.16, at 1 p.m.
