Boys out front in track meet

ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School boys’ track team edged out Old Town Saturday to win the season’s third league meet. The Trojan boys finished with 108 points, Old Town with 93, Orono with 50, Foxcroft Academy with 28 and Ellsworth with 10. The MDI girls were fourth of five teams with 19 points. Old Town won the girls’ meet with 116 points, followed by Orono with 76, Ellsworth with 43, MDI with 19 and Foxcroft Academy with 17.

“I’m super happy with where we are,” Coach Brad Witham said. “At this point, it’s about looking ahead, trying people in different events so we’re a well-rounded team.”

Caroline Driscoll won the 2-mile run with 12:36.68 and finished second in the 800-meter run with 2:33.5. Ashley Anderson was fifth in the 800-meter with 2:47.24.

Four MDI girls who are normally throwers attempted the 55-meter dash but did not make the final round. Riley Mooers was 12th in the preliminary round with a time of 9:21 seconds, Paige Murphy was 13th with 9:48, Delia Hallett was 14th with 9:52, and Allison Gray was 15th with 9.66.

“I really want the conditioning factor for them as well. Well-rounded training for everyone is the name of the game,” Witham said.

Lady Trojan throwers continue to improve. Hallett climbed to fourth place with 26 feet 10 inches in shot put. Mooers was fifth with 26 feet 6.75 inches, Eliza McGarr was sixth with 25 feet 4.25 inches, Gray was tied for eighth with 20 feet 10 inches, and Murphy was twelfth with 19 feet 4.5 inches.

Jennifer Clemens was fifth in high jump with 4 feet 4 inches.

For the boys, Aidan Robichaud-Ward, Jose Chumbe, Josh Bloom and Ralph Magnani won the 4×800-meter relay with a time of 9:11.46. In the 55-meter hurdles for MDI, Matt Hanna finished second with 8.67 seconds, and Jordan Harris was third with 9.27 seconds. Ryan Bender was third in the 55-meter dash with 6.89 seconds. Aaron Miller was sixth with 7.39.

Robichaud-Ward was second in the one-mile run with 5:02.39. Brandon Murphy won the 400-meter dash with 54.51 seconds, Hanna was second with 55.76, Bloom was fourth with 57.17, and Noah Clark-Sigmon was eleventh with 1:06.80. Magnani won the 800-meter run with 2:08.46, and Robichaud-Ward was runner up with 2:21.64.

In the 200-meter dash, Brandon Murphy was second with 24.75 seconds. Stanley Grierson was seventh in the 2-mile run with 11:53.64.

Brandon Murphy, Hanna, Harris and Magnani won the 4×200-meter sprint relay with 1:38.02.

Evan Jeannote was third in shot put with 36 feet 10 inches. Croix Albee was seventh with 34 feet 10.75 inches, and Micah Hallett was tenth with 30 feet 6.25 inches.

Bender won the long jump with 19 feet 5.5 inches and the triple jump with 38 feet 4 inches. Miller won the high hump with 5 feet 8 inches. Harris won the pole vault with 11 feet.

The league announced Monday a time change for the Saturday, Jan. 17, meet in Orono. Meet 3B is now set to begin at 5:40 p.m. at the field house.
