BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis team hosted Hampden Academy April 11 for the first preseason meet. Coaches didn’t keep track of the results from the exhibition games, but the competition was especially helpful for players new to varsity, or new to singles competition.
“We’re a young team,” MDI coach Ben Rowell said of the turnover from last year. “We lost a lot of senior boys and girls last year who were really good leaders.”
In the number one singles slot, seniors Madeline Cook and Luke Krebs “are each in the top 16 players in the state,” Rowell said. For the rest of the lineup, “I hope to have the singles set and find the best combinations in doubles.”
In the number two singles matches, junior Ivy Wallace and senior Teryn Miller each came back from deep deficits to keep the match going. Both played mostly doubles in last year’s meets. Wallace was down 3-0, but fought her way to 4-1, on the way to a 6-2 loss. Miller also lost his first three games, but put together some smart plays and took enough points for a 6-4 loss.
The varsity boys will host Camden Hills Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. The first meet of the regular season is set for Monday, April 28, at Old Town.
