BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity tennis teams split with Ellsworth last Thursday at home.
The MDI girls won 4-1, and the Ellsworth boys won 4-1.
Lady Trojan tennis has had a banner season, going 10-1 so far with one team match left to play.
The MDI boys are 6-5 on the season.
“It was a long week with four matches, but the girls played well,” Coach Ben Rowell said. “We were able to avenge our one loss to John Bapst, finally played the way we are capable against Ellsworth, and I think the girls can see what is ahead if we play like we can.
“The boys went 2-2, and our two wins were huge for us. We played well against Bapst and Ellsworth, but they are two very strong teams, and we will have to play really well to beat them. But the boys should make the playoffs and then the season starts over, and we will see what happens. With Luke leading us, I like our chances.”
In first singles, Sarah Phelps fell to Ellsworth’s Sarah Shelton 8-5 for the only MDI loss. Ivy Wallace won her match 8-3, and Maeve Geary won 8-0. Emily and Olivia McCarthy won 8-1, and Ellie Bridgers and India Janes won 8-3.
“Emily and Olivia played especially well against Ellsworth, and we will need them to keep playing like that in the playoffs,” Rowell said.
Luke Horton secured the only win for the MDI boys against Ellsworth, defeating Evan Toothaker 8-1. Kaleb Payson and Teddy Geary each won one game, falling 8-1. Hamish Stevenson and Hunter Strauch were defeated 8-3, and Drake Janes and Jimmy Carroll fell 8-2. Henry Helmke and Hayden Goodwin lost an exhibition match by an 8-1 score.
At home on May 20, the MDI girls defeated John Bapst 3-2. Phelps fell to Sarah Storgaard of Bapst 8-2. Wallace won her match 8-6, and Geary won 8-3. Emily and Olivia McCarthy fell 8-3, but Bridgers and India Janes had a crucial 8-1 win.
Horton defeated Bapst’s Paul Branch 8-3. Payson lost a close match 8-6, and Geary fell 8-3. Strauch and Drake Janes fell 8-0 at first doubles. Carroll and Helmke battled through an 8-4 loss. Avery LaValle and Hayden Goodwin won an exhibition match 5-4.
The teams were set to travel to Old Town Wednesday for their final regular season contest.
