Trojan tennis tames Ponies

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity boys’ and girls’ tennis teams defeated Foxcroft Academy at home Monday.

The 5-0 win puts the Lady Trojans at 7-1 on the season, third seed in the league behind Waterville and Oceanside.

The MDI boys went 4-1, improving to a 5-3 record and eighth seed.

“We’re playing really well right now and getting better,” Coach Ben Rowell said.

Sarah Phelps won her match 8-3, Ivy Wallace won 8-2, and Maeve Geary won 8-2. Emily and Olivia McCarthy gave up only one game at first doubles for an 8-1 win. Ellie Bridgers and India Janes had a perfect 8-0. The teams played two exhibition matches: Molly Corson and Delaney Smith won 8-1, and Gabby Link and Smith won 8-1.

In boys’ singles, Luke Horton won 8-3, Kaleb Payson won 8-1, and Teddy Geary won 9-7. In doubles, Hamish Stevenson and Hunter Strauch fell 8-1. Jimmy Carroll and Henry Helmke won 8-2. Hayden Goodwin and Helmke won an exhibition match 8-2.

In the opening rounds of the state singles tournament Saturday, four Trojans progressed to the round of 48. Phelps, Wallace, Horton and Payson are set to play next week at Colby College.

“It’s really neat to have four kids get through,” Rowell said. “Especially for Kaleb, he’s got another year, so it’s going to be big for his confidence for the rest of the season and going into next season. They are four of the best 48 kids in the state. It’s a cool thing for them.”
