MOUNT DESERT — The 11th annual Maine Sea Coast Mission Open Tennis Tournament was held in September at the Northeast Harbor Tennis Club.
While the tournament was played in Northeast Harbor, sponsors and players came from throughout eastern Maine. More than 100 people attended this special event, the proceeds of which benefit the mission’s EdGE youth development program.
The four teams advancing to the semifinals were The Docksider, John Williams Boat Company, Small Animal Clinic and Mount Desert Island Hospital. The team sponsored by the Small Animal Clinic captured the championship in a close match with The John Williams Boat Company. Competitive matches were played throughout the day by Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, Dead River Company, Machias Business Group, EdGE and Big Red Tomatoes.
The court sponsor was Bar Harbor Savings & Loan. Patron sponsors included Stefan H. Cushman, Patsy E. Fogarty and Edward T. Fogarty.
The Northeast Harbor Tennis Club donated the use of their courts; Hannaford Supermarket donated food, beverages and dry goods; Side Street Café donated lunch; and the Docksider Restaurant donated coffee, bagels and donuts, all of which were enjoyed and appreciated by those in attendance. Mount Desert Spring Water donated water to keep the players hydrated.
The EdGE program provides in-school, after-school and summer programs for over 700 children in 17 Down East communities.
