Tennis players qualify for singles tourney; teams beat Bangor, fall to Hampden

BANGOR — Mount Desert Island tennis players had a busy few days both individually and as a team as the Trojans competed in two matches and the state singles qualifiers.

The MDI boys’ and girls’ teams claimed wins in last Wednesday’s road matches against Bangor and fell to defeats in Monday’s away contests against Hampden Academy. The Trojans also had three players qualify for the state singles tournament as Taber Allen, Lelia Weir and Weston Granholm advanced to next week’s Round of 32.

Last Wednesday, the MDI boys’ and girls’ teams improved to 4-1 and 5-0, respectively, with road wins over Bangor. The Trojans claimed a 5-0 win to win their fourth straight contest on the boys’ side and 3-2 to stay undefeated in girls’ play.

On Saturday, players from MDI and other eastern Maine schools competed in state singles qualifiers throughout the Bangor area. Allen (8-6 over John Bapst’s Katie Nguyen; 6-0, 6-1 over Calais’ Cassidy Carr), Weir (8-2 over Orono’s Brynn Keney; 6-0, 6-0 over Piscataquis’ Sadie Davis) and Granholm (8-0 over Ellsworth’s Kai Barrett; walk over Orono’s Adam Henderson) gave the Trojans three qualifiers with their respective victories.

Also competing in singles qualifying for MDI were Austria Morehouse, Jack Hodgdon, Moses Lincoln and Finn Seyffer. Hodgdon claimed an 8-6 win over Hermon’s Patrick Verrill in his opening match before falling to Hampden’s Oliver Bois in the final match.

On Monday, MDI’s winning streaks came to an end with 3-2 (girls) and 5-0 (boys) defeats against Hampden. Both of the Trojans’ wins came in girls’ double play with Avonlea Brown and Olivia Chandler beating Hampden’s Sam Quesney and Ana Schmidt 9-8 (7-5) and Julia Perconti and Jane Pope topping Ella Baldwin and Chandler Smith 8-4.

MDI was set to face Bangor on Tuesday with the girls’ team hosting the Rams and the boys’ team playing at Bangor High School. The Trojans will then play on the road against Ellsworth at 4 p.m. tomorrow, May 14, before playing Belfast on Tuesday, May 17 (boys home at 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.; girls on the road at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.).

MDI’s singles tournament qualifiers will compete at Lewiston high school beginning next week. Matches are scheduled for next Friday, May 21, next Saturday, May 22, and the following Monday, May 24.
