MDI’s Horton falls in round of 16



LEWISTON — Luke Horton of the Mount Desert Island Trojans reached the Round of 16 before falling in the high school singles state championship tournament held in Portland and Lewiston.

Horton was one of eight Hancock County players who advanced to the tournament’s Round of 48.

Three of those players scored wins In first round play on Saturday at the Maine Racket and Fitness Center in Portland.

In girls’ matches, Ina Maloney of the Ellsworth Eagles bested Mackenzie Conlogue of Mount Blue 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), and Madeline Cook of MDI downed Claire Valley of Brewer 6-1, 6-1.

GSA’s Charlotte Reiter was downed 6-1, 6-1 by Margot Andreasen of Portland.

In the second round, fifth-seeded Julia Brogan of Falmouth downed Maloney 6-0, 6-0; and top-seeded Maisie Silverman of Brunswick defeated Cook 6-0, 6-0.

In boys’ action, Ben Haslam of Ellsworth defeated Michael Marquis of Caribou 7-5, 6-3.

Ellsworth’s Evan Toothaker was downed 6-2, 6-1 by Bruce Tetreault of North Yarmouth Academy; and Alex Heilner of the George Stevens Academy Eagles won his first set 6-3 before falling 6-2, 6-1 to Austin Pohlman of Camden Hills.

Horton, who advanced directly to the second round, downed Alex Townsend of Hampden Academy 6-4, 6-1.

Johnny Xue of the GSA Eagles also advanced directly to the second round but defaulted to Andrew Lamonica of York after winning the first set 6-3.

Ellsworth’s Haslam fell 6-0, 6-0 to seventh-seeded Satchel McCarthy of Cape Elizabeth.

On Monday in Lewiston, Horton was downed 6-0, 6-1 by third-seeded Patrick Ordway, who won the state title in 2011.
