Ellsworth’s Toothaker, MDI’s Horton reach round of 16 in tennis singles

WATERVILLE — Evan Toothaker of the Ellsworth Eagles and Luke Horton of the Mount Desert Island Trojans reached the Round of 16 in the state tennis singles tourney before being eliminated at Colby College on Saturday.

Toothaker defeated Cole Ouellette of Lewiston in three sets, 6-0, 3-6, 6-3 in the Round of 32 before falling to Luke Gilman of Cape Elizabeth 6-2, 6-2.

Horton, who was seeded seventh, bested Matthew Jarmusz of Morse 6-3, 7-6 (10-8) in the Round of 32 before falling to 10th-seeded Gabriel Torres of Cape Elizabeth 6-2, 6-4.

In other boys’ action in the Round of 48:

Alex Heilner of George Stevens Academy eked out a 7-6 first set win on a 9-7 tiebreaker against Josh Landry of Bangor but Landry took the next two sets 6-2 and 7-6 (7-4).

Thomas Brent of Gorham downed Ben Haslam of Ellsworth 6-1, 6-0.

In girls’ action:

Ellsworth’s Lily Watanabe bested Meridith Blessart of Mattanawcook Academy 7-5, 6-2 in the Round of 48 but fell to top-seeded and eventual champion Olivia Leavitt of Falmouth 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 32.

Julia Richardson of Windham downed Sarah Phelps of Mount Desert Island 6-0, 6-0 in the Round of 48.

In the Round of 32, Margot Andreasen of Portland defeated Madeline Cook of MDI 6-0, 7-5.
