ELLSWORTH — With wins in Wednesday’s Eastern Maine Class B tennis quarterfinals, the Ellsworth Eagle and Mount Desert Island Trojan girls will advance to face each other in semifinal action on Saturday.
But the season came to an end for the Deer Isle-Stonington Mariner girls, who fell to the Schenck Wolverines of East Millinocket in a Class C preliminary playoff.
In indoor action at the Ellsworth Tennis Center, the fourth-ranked Eagles won every singles match over the fifth-ranked Wildcats in their 3-2 victory.
At first singles, Olivia Mora squeaked past Sara Gilson in the first set 7-6, winning a tiebreaker 7-3. Mora dropped the second set 4-6 but came on to win the third 6-3.
Lily Watanabe fell to Hilary Boucher 4-6 in her first set at second singles but came on to win the next two, 6-4 and 7-5.
And at third singles, Sarah Shelton won in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Blair Bailey.
Presque Isle’s Michelle Cawley and Lora Ireland dropped their first set 4-6 to Lauren Hale and Josie Schmale at first doubles, but came back to win the next two by identical 6-4 scores.
At second doubles, it was Sarah Morneault and Sedona Lucas of the Wildcats over Sydnee Rae and Alexa Grant 6-3, 6-4.
The top-ranked MDI Trojans downed number eight Oceanside 4-1 in Bar Harbor, losing only at third singles.
For the Trojans, it was Madeline Cook over Lily Butler 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, and Ivy Wallace over Alayna Joyce 6-1, 6-0 at second singles.
In doubles for the Trojans, it was Sierra Bloom and Olivia McCarthy over Mary Allen and Clara Feltus 7-5, 6-3, and Maeve Geary and Emily McCarthy over Emily Prothero and Rachel Johnson 6-3, 6-1.
For eighth-ranked Oceanside, Meghan McGonagle downed Emily Cough 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 at third singles.
MDI’s Trojans will host the Ellsworth girls in Bar Harbor in semifinal action at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
The lone playoff win for 10th-ranked Deer Isle-Stonington against Schenck came by forfeit in second doubles.
For the seventh-ranked Wolverines, it was Nicole Chasse over Allison Cormier 9-8 (7-5), Courtney Perry over Megan Weed 8-3 and Mary Watson over Sasha Zembrusky 8-3 in singles, and Becca Carroll and Olivia Marston over Jordan Judkins and Justine Rhys 9-7 in doubles.
Wet conditions forced postponements today (Thursday) of two other Class C quarterfinals.
In girls’ action, the top-seeded George Stevens Academy Eagles will face the ninth-ranked Mattanawcook Academy Lynx tomorrow (Friday) at 2 p.m. at the Bangor Tennis Center.
Immediately following those matches, the second-ranked GSA boys will square off against the number seven Deer Isle-Stonington Mariners at the Bangor facility.
