YMCA Sharks swim to third at states



ORONO — The University of Maine pool complex was packed over the weekend with the three-day YMCA State Championship swim meet. The Sharks of the Mount Desert Island YMCA finished third in team scores with 1837.5 points, behind the Long Reach Swim Club/Bath YMCA and the Downeast Family YMCA in Ellsworth.

“It was a great weekend by all,” Coach Jim Willis said. “We had lots of great times and awesome relay swims.” He said the team result “showed the quality of swimmers” in the Sharks program.

The meet began Friday evening with boys in the 13-14 and 15-up age divisions. Jacob Mitchell, Liam Sullivan, Zeke Valleau and Lucas Ingebritson were third in the 200-yard medley relay with 1:57.24 and fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:47.99. Pierce DiMauro was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with 1:51.90. Mitchell was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle with 51.19 seconds.

Saturday morning, the 9-10 girls took the pool. Heather Finger, Abby Casey, Nina Rozeff and Zoe Horton were runners up in the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 2:39.66. Lily James was third in the 100-yard individual medley with 1:25.38. Addy Smith was third in the 100-yard freestyle with 1:12.27. Sadie Sullivan and Smith were second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard breaststroke. Sadie Sullivan, James, Gracie Parker and Smith were second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with 2:19.22.

Saturday afternoon, it was the 9-10 and 11-12 boys’ turn. Cody Parker, Sam Mitchell, Amos Price and Tyler Willis were runners up in the 200-yard medley relay with 2:16.13. In the 9-10s, Sam Schleif, Brendan Graves, Jacob Benson and Joris Korstanje were runners up in the 200-yard medley relay with 2:45.75. Amos Price was champion in the 100-yard individual medley with his time of 1:07.00 and runner-up in the 50-yard butterfly with 28.78. Sam Mitchell won the 50-yard freestyle with 27.94 seconds and tied for second in the 50-yard breaststroke with 36.81 seconds.

For the older girls divisions Saturday night, Lydia DaCorte won the 200-yard freestyle with her time of 1:56.48. Leila Johnston set a meet record in the 200-yard individual medley with her winning time of 2:09.63. Johnston was second in the 100-yard freestyle with 52.38 seconds. DaCorte was first in the 500-yard freestyle with 5:16.47.

Sunday morning, Finley Smith won the 25-yard breaststroke in the 8-and-under girls division with her time of 22.83 seconds. For the youngest boys, Sebastian Cullen, Caden Braun, Colin Sullivan and Eli Hansbury were third in the 100-yard medley relay with 1:38.51. Braun was third in the 25-yard breaststroke with 22.94 seconds. Liam McKernan, Jameson Weir, Sullivan and Hansbury were third in the 100-yard freestyle relay with 1:36.02.

Several swimmers recorded qualifying times for upcoming New England and national meets.
