YMCA Sharks compete at states



ORONO — The Sharks swim team of the Mount Desert Island YMCA finished seventh at the state championship meet held at the University of Maine pool complex from Friday, March 4, to Sunday, March 6. The team had a total score of 1,604 points.

“We did really well overall,” Coach Jim Willis said. “I’m very happy with the season so far; we had a good crop of younger kids this year.”

For boys in the 8-and-under age division, Colin Sullivan took first place in the 25-yard backstroke event with a time of 20.01 seconds. Sullivan finished second in the 25-yard butterfly with 18.91 seconds, as well as in the 100-yard individual medley with 1:38.47.

On the 8-and-under girls’ side, Peighton Skeate took third place in the 25-yard backstroke with a time of 20.80 seconds, as well as in the 100-yard individual medley with 1:42.08.

For 9-10 boys, Brendan Graves was on top in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:20.91. Graves also took second in the 50-yard butterfly with 35.85 seconds, and Caden Braun was in third place with a time of 39.41.

The relay team of Riley Donahue, Jordan Casey, Jack Richards and Samuel York was third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:34.65. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Rex DeMuro, Graves, Braun and Liam McKernan was in third place with 2:40.85.

Lily James finished on top in the 50-yard freestyle for the 9-10 girls with her time of 30.27 seconds. James was also in first place in the 50-yard backstroke with 35.87.

Zoe Horton was second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 32.39 seconds, as well as in the 100-yard individual medley with a 1:18.20.

The relay team of Gracie Parker, Finley Smith, Nina Rozeff and Elle Yarborough was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:16.65. Also in second place was the team of James, Smith, Horton and Yarborough in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:28.34.

In the 11-12 boys, Sam Mitchell took first place in the 50-yard freestyle relay with a time of 25.40 seconds. Mitchell also took second in the 50-yard breaststroke in 33 seconds.

The relay team of Cody Parker, Mitchell, T.J. Willis and Julian Walls was second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:11.34.

Adria Horton was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 11-12 girls with her time of 2:19.28.

For the older boys’ division, Liam Sullivan took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.32 seconds. Sullivan was also on top in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.25. Jacob Mitchell was fourth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.29 seconds.

Lydia DaCorte won the 500-yard freestyle event in older girls’ division with her time of 5:28.67 and came in sixth place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:16.75.

Several swimmers recorded qualifying times for upcoming New England and national meets.
