Trojans douse Witches



BREWER — Both the girls and boys of the Mount Desert Island High School swim team flew past the Brewer Witches in a dual meet Friday at the Aloupis pool.

Team scores were 124 points for the MDI girls to Brewer’s 51. The Trojan boys had 118 points to 51 for Brewer.

“The kids are definitely swimming more aggressively,” MDI Coach Tony DeMuro said. “That will be the theme for the upcoming weeks, lots of sprinting and very fast training. We have just over 4 weeks left, no time to relax!”

In the boys 200-yard medley relay, MDI ‘A’ team Sam TeHennepe, Will Greene, Jacob Mitchell and Clifton Jeffrey were first with a time of 2:06.34. ‘B’ team Herbie Shaw, Kristoph Naggert, Hutchin Gerrish and Lanvin Estacio were a close second with 2:07.03.

Naggert won the 200-yard freestyle with 2:04.70. Billy Kerley won the 200-yard individual medley with 2:22.98. TeHennepe was second with 2:33.56. Mitchell was first in the 50-yard freestyle with 24.04 seconds. Shaw was third with 29.19. Pierce DiMauro won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.25, followed by Mitchell in second with 1:03.86.

Kerley won the 100-yard freestyle with 56.42. In the 500-yard freestyle, Naggert finished first with 5:33.37 and TeHennepe was second with 6:02.91.

Gerrish, Greene, Jeffery and Estacio took second in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:54.52. DiMauro won the 100-yard backstroke with 1:06.58. Gerrish won the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:14.37 and Greene was second with 1:15.74. Kerley, Mitchell, Shaw and DiMauro won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:52.60.

In the middle of the meet, divers from both teams took center stage. Several MDI divers recorded their best scores of the season so far, MDI diving Coach Chris Schleif said. Chelsea Schroeder finished with 133.6 points. Will Greene won the boys’ diving with 260.1. Bryce DiMauro was second with 143.65 and new diver Yanni Roguski was fourth with 108.15.

In girls’ swimming, Lady Trojan relay team Maddie Woodworth, Helena Munson, Sydney Wright and Aubrie Boyce were second in the 200-yard medley with a time of 2:14.98. Lydia DaCorte won the 200-yard freestyle with 2:02.25. Wright was second with 2:18.86. Rachel Jacobs finished second in the 200-yard individual medley.

Eliza Schleif finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with 28.10 seconds. Mary Ellen Sharp was third with 29.55. Woodworth won the 100-yard butterfly with 1:12.65, followed by Boyce with 1:13.02. DaCorte won the 100-yard freestyle with 54.99 seconds. Annie Painter was third with 1:06.45.

Ceileigh Weaver was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:39.46. Jacobs was third with 6:48.94. Rebecca Gerrish, Paige Mason, Waylon Henggeler and DaCorte won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:59.50. Boyce, Jacobs, Kirstin DiMauro and Woodworth were second with 1:59.96.

Abby Kelly won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:17.14. Sammy Jacobs was second with 1:19.72. Woodworth won the 100-yard breaststroke with 1:23.49, followed by Painter in second with 1:25.30 and Schleif in third with 1:34.80.

Bailey Cust, Weaver, Mason and Schleif were first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with 4:35.19. Kirstin DiMauro, Georgia Hansbury, Henggeler and Leila Johnston were second with 4:36.76. Johnston’s times in several individual events were not counted toward team scores.

MDI is set to take on Orono at the University of Maine pool Friday, Jan. 16 and to host rival Bangor at the MDI YMCA Friday, Jan. 23.
