Swimmers swamp Orono



ORONO — The Mount Desert Island High School swim and dive team came away with a double victory when they took on Orono on Friday. The girls’ team won 124-50. The boys won 118-49.

“It’s another step in the right direction,” MDI Coach Tony DeMuro said. “We are working hard to get into great shape as we get near the end of the season.” With less than four weeks left before the state championships, he said, “we need to be efficient with our time. The emphasis in practice is on speed, and swimming aggressively. So far, the kids have responded well to the challenges at practice and in the meets.”

Leila Johnston, Aubrie Boyce, Waylon Henggeler and Grace Higgins won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 2:09.87. Mary Ellen Sharp was second in the 200-yard freestyle with 2:21.46. Boyce was second in the 200-yard individual medley with 2:38.95.

Johnston won the 50-yard freestyle with 24.5 seconds. Maddie Woodworth was second with 27.45.

Lydia DaCorte was first in the 100-yard freestyle with 1:02.45, Sydney Wright was second with 1:12.81, and Rebecca Gerrish was third with 1:18.60. Woodworth won the 100-yard freestyle with 59.36 seconds. Ceileigh Weaver was second with 1:03.25.

Eliza Schleif won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:11.74.

Kirstin DiMauro, Bailey Cust, Woodworth and Weaver won the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:59.80. ‘B’ team Sharp, Rachel Jacobs, Sammy Jacobs and Henggeler were second with 2:03.33. DaCorte was first in the 100-yard backstroke with 1:05.73. Wright was second with 1:19.85.

Rachel Jacobs was second in the 100-yard backstroke with 1:22.50. Higgins was fourth with 1:36.92. In the 400-yard freestyle relay, Weaver, Abby Kelly, Sharp and Schleif were first with 4:25.31.

Four MDI divers took the board in mid-meet. Chelsea Schroeder had 148.70 points. Will Greene led the boys with 257.65, Bryce DiMauro was second with 159.05, and Yanni Roguski was third with 111.55.

On the boys’ side, Jacob Mitchell, Kristoph Naggert, Pierce DiMauro and Lanvin Estacio won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.33. Kohl Shaw won the 200-yard freestyle with 2:02.80. Hutchin Gerrish was second with 2:06.68. Mitchell won the 200-yard individual medley with 2:17.24.

Pierce DiMauro won the 50-yard freestyle with 25.02 seconds. Sam TeHennepe was second with 27.07. Shaw was second in the 100-yard butterfly with 1:10.85. Naggert was second in the 100-yard freestyle with 54.64 seconds.

Billy Kerley, TeHennepe, Roguski and Herbie Shaw won the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:53.06. Mitchell was second in the 100-yard backstroke with 1:03.66. Pierce DiMauro won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:09.97. Herbie Shaw was second with 1:34.47.

Hutchin Gerrish, Greene, Naggert and Kohl Shaw won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:55.93.

“We are looking forward to a very competitive dual meet with Bangor on Friday, one of the best teams in Class A,” DeMuro said. “Swimming them always gets the kids pumped up.”

The meet is set for 6 p.m. at the MDI YMCA pool on Park Street in Bar Harbor.
