MDI Swimmers Swamp Competition

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School swim team won its first regular season meet against Washington Academy on Friday, Dec. 14. They easily outpaced their opponents at the YMCA.

In all but one event – the girls’ 100 yard breaststroke, won by Summer Hodgdon of Washington Academy – MDI swimmers placed first. In the other 20 events, MDI swimmers outpaced their opponents to occupy nearly all the top finishes.

“They’re kind of a new team,” said MDI head coach Tony DeMuro of the Washington team. “Not many teams can offer the same competition we can.” The MDI team has nearly 50 swimmers, or 10 percent of the high school student body.

The swim team is next scheduled to compete against Caribou High School on Dec. 21 at the Mount Desert Island YMCA at 5 p.m.
