OLD TOWN — Members of the Mount Desert Island High School swim team bagged more first place finishes in an away meet against Old Town High School on Jan. 4.
Despite missing swimmers following the holiday break, MDI won 15 of the 22 events. Lucas Wood, Thomas Gallup, Ross Johnston, and Sam Jacobson placed first in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 2:03.13. Old Town swimmers finished that event in 2:04.89.
Gallup also finished first in the 200-yard freestyle event for the Trojans in a time of 2:10.82. The closest Old Town swimmer finished that event in 2:19.55, or nearly nine seconds behind Gallup.
Erin Connery finished the freestyle in first place in the girls’ heat in a time of 2:06.50. Old Town swimmer Sarah Vaillancourt, who completed the event in a time of 2:25.42, followed up Connery in second place.
Gallup also placed first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.34. He outpaced the second place finisher in that event by nearly 10 seconds. Avalon Kerley placed first in the girls’ breaststroke in a time of 1:15.01. Kerley beat out Vaillancourt from Old Town, who placed second in that event, by slightly more than three seconds.
Leila Johnston won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:03.76. Trojan Mary Ellen Sharp placed second in that event, finishing in a time of 1:16.88, or just in front of teammate Maggie Painter who clocked a time of 1:17.37.
Old Town swimmers placed first in the girls’ 200-yard Medley relay, the girls’ 100-yard butterfly, the boys’ 100-yard freestyle, the girls’ 500-yard freestyle, the boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay, and the girls’ and boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay.
The MDI swimmers are next scheduled to compete against Brewer High School at the Mount Desert Island YMCA on Friday, Jan. 11.
