MDI swimmers noted for wins

BAR HARBOR — The high school swimming season has ended but awards are still flooding in.

Two athletes on the Mount Desert Island High School boys’ team were among this year’s elite. Ross Johnston was crowned the Class B, male swimmer of the year.

Will Greene was named the Class B, male diver of the year.

In the recent Class B state championship, Johnston led his team with two first place finishes in individual events, setting a new MDI record in the 200-yard freestyle event.

Coach Tony DeMuro was also among those receiving awards.

He was honored as Penobscot Valley Conference (PVC) coach of the year after the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ swimming and diving team won the annual championship under his guidance.

With that PVC victory, MDI dethroned the dominant Class A Bangor High School team that had won the event 14 consecutive years and topped MDI during regular season meets earlier this year.

Another top swimmer for the boys’ team, Madison Luck, was elected athlete citizen of the year, an award given by the YMCA. That accolade came with a $500 check.
