MDI swimmers, divers outpace Brewer Witches

Swimmers get set during the fi rst heat of the girls’ 200 yard free style event in a meet between Mount Desert Island High School and Brewer High School. MDI won the Jan. 11 home meet, though Brewer proved one of its toughest opponents this season.

BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School swimming team faced its toughest competition this season in a meet against Brewer High School on Jan. 11.

Brewer won the first two events at the meet – the 200-yard medley relays. Following those races, MDI placed swimmers in the 200-yard free style event. Olivia Jacobs finished first in a time of 2:13.43. Isabel Erickson placed second in a time of 2:27.45, followed by Trojan Kimmie Banks in a time of 2:34.57.

The MDI boys placed well in the 50-yard freestyle event. Thomas Gallup finished first in a time of 25.20. Madison Luck finished in second, just one tenth of a second behind Gallup in a time of 25.30.

The MDI girls’ dominated the 50-yard freestyle event. Aubrie Boyce placed first in a time of 29.35, followed by Samantha Luck in a time of 29.51.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Pierce DiMauro placed second behind Magnus Dypvik from Brewer in a time of 1:09.29. Dypvik’s time was 1:05.56. MDI swimmer Naggert Kristoph finished in third behind DiMauro in a time of 1:11.99. Trojan Tyler Wood followed him in fourth in a time of 1:17.87.

Maggie Painter won the girls’ heat of the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:17.17, followed by Trojans Rebecca Gerrish and Mary Ellen Sharp in times of 1:19.19 and 1:24.50.

Brewer swimmers walked away from that meet with first place finishes in the boys’ 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events as well as the boys’ 100-yard backstroke and the girls’ and boys’ 100-yard breaststroke.

Trojans Isabel Erickson, Evelyn Swan, Sydney Wright, and Erin Connery won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 4:17.52. Nathaniel Genrich, Sam Jacobson, Thomas Gallup, and Ross Johnston won the boys’ heat of that event in a time of 3:44.28.

Some 13 girls are qualified for the Maine state meet at the end of the season, and “there are five more who are really close,” coach DeMuro said. Eight members of the boys’ team have qualified as well.

The MDI high school swim team is scheduled to compete against Orono High School on Jan. 18 at the YMCA in Bar Harbor.

The MDI High School diving team also faced the Brewer Witches at the Jan. 11 meet. Will Greene scored a MDI record, 212.70 points in his six dives, to lead the boys’ event. Nick Speed, of Brewer, placed second with 112 points.

Brewer won the girls diving event, led by Glory Watson with 180 points. Lavalle Nellie placed third in girls’ diving and first for the Lady Trojans with 117 points.
