MDI swim team earns sweep of Bangor

BANGOR — The Mount Desert Island swim teams both claimed wins in Friday’s meet against Bangor at Husson University. 

The MDI girls’ team breezed to a 131-47 victory over the Rams. On the boys’ side, the Trojans claimed a 101-83 win over a strong Bangor squad. 

The MDI boys won the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute, 47.60 seconds (Julian Walls, Jesse Lower, Sam Schleif, Brendan Graves). Lower (200-yard freestyle, 1:54.23; 100-yard butterfly, 58.31 seconds) and Graves (100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.48) also added individual wins for the Trojans. 

In other action for the MDI boys, Oakley Bench posted a score of 119.4 to take first place in the 1-meter dive. Sam York reached the wall in 53.74 seconds to win the 100-yard freestyle for the Trojans, who used their team depth to grind out a win over the host team. 

The MDI girls began a sweep of all three relay races with a win in the 200-yard medley relay (Cecilia Saltysiak, Lily James, Maria Saltysiak, Nina Rozeff, 2:02.53). The Trojans then won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 1:55.24 (Callan Eason, Olivia Underwood, Lily Allen, Gracie Parker) and the 200-yard freestyle relay in 4:06.52 (Rozeff, Cecilia Saltysiak, Eason, Elle Yarborough). 

Eason also won two individual events (50-yard freestyle, 26.91; 100-yard freestyle, 59.73) for MDI. The Trojans also got wins from Yarborough (200-yard freestyle, 2:14.81), James (500-yard freestyle, 5:58.65), Cecilia Saltysiak (100-yard backstroke, 1:05.18) and Addy Smith (100-yard breaststroke, 1:07.48). 

MDI’s next meet will be against Ellsworth at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 28,  at the MDI YMCA. The Trojans will then close out the season at home against George Stevens Academy at that time next Friday, Feb. 4.
