MDI girls first, boys second in swim relays



ORONO — In a close matchup, the Mount Desert Island High School girls’ swim team pulled ahead of Bangor Saturday to win the PVC Relay Carnival meet at the University of Maine. The MDI boys came in second of five teams. The girls finished with 188 points to Bangor’s 180. With 170 points, the MDI boys finished midway between the winning Bangor boys, with 216, and third-place Old Town boys, with 152.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the first MDI team finished second with a time of 2:03.01. They were Rebecca Gerrish, Ceileigh Weaver, Leila Johnston and Eliza Schleif. Mary Ellen Sharp, Aubrie Boyce, Sydney Wright and Lydia DaCorte won the “25, 50, 75, 100” 250-yard freestyle relay with 2:24.24. Weaver, Boyce, Schleif and Wright won the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:53.40, less than a second ahead of the Old Town team.

Maddie Woodworth, Avalon Kerley, DaCorte and Johnston won the 4×100-yard medley relay with 4:21.91. Sharp, Rachel Jacobs, Woodworth and Gerrish won the 200-yard backstroke relay with 2:10.46. Sarah Soucek, Weaver, Jacobs and Kerley won the 200-yard breaststroke relay with 2:27.49. DaCorte, Schleif, Wright and Johnston won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:54.03.

MDI divers Kerley and Chelsea Schroeder won the girls’ diving with a score of 85.40. For the boys, Yanni Roguski and Bryce DiMauro were runners up in diving with 95.15 points.

On the boys’ side, Kristoph Naggert, Pierce DiMauro, Sam TeHennepe and Hutchin Gerrish took third place in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.23. Roguski, Billy Kerley, Kohl Shaw and Jacob Mitchell were second in the “25, 50, 75, 100” 250-yard freestyle relay with 2:12.60. MDI was fourth in the 200-yard butterfly relay with 2:25.28. The team was TeHennepe, Roguski, Lanvin Estacio and Herbie Shaw.

Mitchell, Billy Kerley, Estacio and Kohl Shaw were third in the 200-yard freestyle relay with 1:45.69. Mitchell, Hutchin Gerrish, Pierce DiMauro and Naggert were second in the 4×100-yard medley relay with 4:17.24. Mitchell, Hutchin Gerrish, TeHennepe and Naggert were second in the 200-yard backstroke relay with 2:03.31. Pierce DiMauro, Billy Kerley, Kohl Shaw and Naggert were second in the 200-yard breaststroke relay with 2:12.09. Hutchin Gerrish, Pierce DiMauro, TeHennepe and Kohl Shaw were third in the 400-yard freestyle relay with 3:50.67.

“So far, the kids look great!” said DeMuro. “We have a lot of returning quality swimmers on the girls’ side. The boys are young but improving. Everyone is working hard, and the attitudes so far have been really good. Now we just work our butts off for the next two months and see how fast we can go!”

MDI is set to host Hampden in a home meet at the MDI YMCA Friday at 6 p.m.
