Boys 3rd in states, girls place fourth



BRUNSWICK — The swim teams of Mount Desert Island High School swam hard and left their marks on the Class B Championship meet this year at Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The Trojan boys rallied from a 40-point deficit to narrowly miss the runners-up spot by just nine points. They came in behind Cape Elizabeth High School. MDI had a total score of 262.5 points.

Ellsworth’s boys’ swim team won the meet and took home its first-ever Class B state title.

The MDI girls’ team finished fourth with 179 points.

“Overall we swam just great all the time; one after another, we kind of got better and better. That’s what we really look for here. We don’t ever know if it’s going to happen, and then it happens,” said MDI Coach Tony DeMuro. “I’m really proud of this team. They’ve been so awesome all season long, and to just be able to put the exclamation point on the season is very gratifying.”

Lydia DaCorte set a new meet record and became the state champion in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:05.68. She was also on tops in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.55 seconds.

Liam Sullivan was the winner of the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:57.08 and of the 100-yard breaststroke with 58.77 seconds.

MDI’s relay team of Jacob Mitchell, Sullivan, Pierce DiMauro and Hutchin Gerrish was second in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.82.

DiMauro was third in the 200-yard freestyle with a 1:50.01.

In the 200-yard individual medley, Gerrish took fourth with a time of 2:08.53, and Kristoph Naggert was sixth with a 2:09.64.

Mitchell finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.83 seconds.

In the 1-meter diving event, Bryce DiMauro placed second with his score of 294.50.

Pierce DiMauro was sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time 50.40 seconds. Gerrish took 11th with a time of 52.31 seconds.

The team of Sam TeHennepe, Naggert, Isaac Weaver and Gerrish was sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.97.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Mitchell was fourth with his time of 57.74 seconds. Naggert took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.27.

The relay team of Pierce DiMauro, Mitchell, Naggert and Sullivan was second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:21.84.

On the girls’ side, the team of Mary Ellen Sharp, Aubrie Boyce, DaCorte and Eliza Schlief earned points for MDI with their fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.59.

Maddie Woodworth was 11th in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.66. Anna Naggert finish 16th with a 2:14. Schlief took 11th place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 26.51 seconds.

In 1-meter diving, junior Chelsea Schroeder was in third place with a total score of 16 points. Boyce was in eighth place in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:03.69.

In the 100-yard backstroke, Sharp was in 11th place with a time of 1:07.42.

Boyce took fourth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.09. Ceileigh Weaver was in 14th place with a 1:15.87.

MDI’s relay team of Schlief, Woodworth, Anna Naggert and DaCorte was fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:48.86.

According to DeMuro, his team “worked hard and they were a great group. They came to practice with good attitudes, and that makes it worth it. Really fantastic job by all the MDI kids.”
