BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island High School softball team is eager to play, even if that means a week or two of indoor practices.

Last year, the Lady Trojans fell to Old Town in playoff quarterfinals in a 10-9 nail biter. They were 11-5 on the regular season.

Pitchers and catchers began practice last week. Veteran pitchers senior Haley Littlefield and junior Aubrie Boyce were joined by Jordan Seavey and Maddie Thorton, who has been pitching since she was very young. Catchers include Riley Mooers, Avalon Kerley and Caroline McMinimy.

This week, tryouts were separated into freshman/senior and sophomore/junior groups. The team lost several seniors last year, including catcher Shelby O’Neil, Deandra Kanu, Hannah Shaw, Sierra Myrick, Abby Jones and Meghan Catanese. Enough players signed up for a solid JV squad but not so many that they’ll need to make cuts, Coach Bruce Walls said. Autumn Jones is the new JV coach. She played softball for Maine Maritime when she was a student there.

Following tough losses to rival Old Town last season, Walls said to expect more “small ball” this year. Old Town liked to bunt the ball, and Walls said the Lady Trojans may start doing more of that too.

“A few might even become slappers if we can teach them,” he said, referring to a left-handed bunt play. “It can get you two extra steps down the line.”

Coaches and administrators continue to monitor the weather and the condition of the fields, hoping for warmer days to melt the snow faster. One indoor preseason game is a pretty sure bet, a matchup against Nokomis inside the dome at the University of Maine in Orono on Saturday, April 11, at 1:30 p.m.
