BREWER — The Mount Desert Island High School varsity softball team was undefeated this week in four preseason contests ahead of opening day today (Thursday). Darcy Kanu and Molly Carroll each hit home runs.
“We’re a work in progress,” Coach Bruce Walls said, “but we’re hitting the ball really well. We try to pick out one or two things after every game that we want to work on.”
MDI 9 – Brewer 4
Sophomore center fielder Kanu had a grand slam in the second inning Tuesday in Brewer, sparking the Trojans to a 6-0 lead. “She crushed it,” Walls said. Riley Mooers and Cassidy Parady batted in the other two runs. MDI added two more runs in the fifth and one in the sixth for their 9-4 victory.
Haley Littlefield pitched the first four innings, allowing five hits and two runs. She struck out four batters. Aubrie Boyce relieved Littlefield at the top of the fifth. She also struck out four and allowed two runs.
MDI 9 – Lake Region 3
MDI defeated Lake Region Saturday afternoon in South Portland at the end of a three-game day. Freshman pitcher Madison Thornton held the Lakers scoreless for three innings while the Trojans zoomed to a 9-0 lead.
Kanu took the first run of the game by stealing home in the first. Carroll was batted in by Ali Bierman, who batted 1.000 in the game.
MDI added seven runs in the third to put the game out of reach of a Lake Region comeback. Thornton allowed three runs in the fourth and was relieved by Littlefield, who threw 16 strikes and 4 balls.
MDI 4 – Lewiston 1
The Lady Trojans had the toughest time against Lewiston midday Saturday, struggling through four scoreless innings before putting together four runs in the fifth to win.
Julianna Cleaves batted in Parady for the first MDI run. Then Kanu hit a home run that brought in three more.
Boyce pitched the first three innings for MDI, throwing 27 strikes and 15 balls. The Blue Devils’ pitchers and first baseman were formidable, and more Trojans were left on base in this game than any other so far.
MDI 8 – Kennebunk 3
Kanu had one run in the bottom of the team’s first game in South Portland Saturday to tie the game 1-1. Carroll’s home run in the second counted for two RBIs. Four more runs after two outs in the second gave the Trojans a 7-1 lead. MDI added one more in the fourth, and Kennebunk had two in the fifth for a final score of 8-3.
Littlefield pitched the first four innings, throwing 40 strikes and 18 balls. Boyce relieved her for the last two outs.
The Lady Trojans are set to meet the George Stevens Academy Eagles today at 4:30 p.m. and host Foxcroft Academy for a double header Saturday at noon.
